Zaimid Hetnim (pronounced ZIGH-meed HEHT-nihm) was a Carthaki nobleman, healer, and close friend to Emperor Kaddar of Carthak. He was the youngest person to ever become the head of the Imperial University's healer's wing[1], and thus he was quite adept at his craft.

Biography

Early life

Zaimid probably received his magical education at the university in Carthak, perhaps at the same time as Kaddar. He became Chief of the Imperial Healers quite young.

Trip to the Copper Isles

Zaimid was visiting the court of the Copper Isles in Rajmuat in 463 HE in order to learn new healing tricks from the other realms. He was a very flirtatious man, and soon became entranced by Saraiyu Balitang, the eldest daughter of the late Mequen Balitang, and his late first wife, Sarugani Temaida. One of the maids, Vereyu, at the Grey Palace described him as progressive since he would flirt with raka, as opposed to the luarin Islanders.

Along with the other young men and women of the court, Zaimid participated in horse rides and walks, as well as other gatherings. He was shown as a kind and staid man. When a riot broke out, he healed Eyun and other raka, which earned him Sarai's respect[2]. Whilst young noblemen like Ferdolin Tomang, Druce Adona, and Jevair Ibadun fought for Sarai's attentions, Zaimid earned them. As he was a devoted worshiper of the Graveyard Hag, the patron goddess of Carthak, she decided to reward him by buying him and Sarai enough time to sneak off to elope. Sarai was all too ready to do so, as she had just learned that she might have had to marry her second cousin Dunevon Rittevon, at the request of the regents.

Sarai and Zaimid married in Carthak, and were expecting a child by the time Dove was crowned queen. They said that they would name the child Mequen if it was a boy in order to honor Sarai's late father. As it is bad luck in the Isles to name a baby after someone who died, Sarai probably made an exception for her baby.

Physical description

Zaimid is described as dressing in the Carthaki style, in a short-sleeved tunic that fell below his knees, and with laced sandals. He had long black hair, that was usually held in a horsetail at the back of his head. He is described as being extremely handsome[1].

Personality and traits

He was portrayed as kind, and helped people if they needed help and without prejudice. Vereyu described him as being an amazing flirt, as well as a heartbreaker[1]. That he would flirt with Lady Saraiyu was a way to tell that he was not from the Copper Isles, according to Vereyu. He was not arrogant. The Graveyard Hag described him as sweet and earnest, and someone who deserved a good marriage.

He also did not jockey for Sarai's affections, unlike the other young noblemen, like Ferdolin Tomang and Druce Adona. He was content simply to ride calmly while the young people played games for Sarai's attention[2]. He was an immensely staid individual, and was the perfect counterpart to Sarai's headstrong and idealistic ways.

Appearances

He only appears so far in Trickster's Queen.

  5. Given that Saraiyu and Dunevon Rittevon were second cousins (Trickster's Queen (electronic edition), Ch. 12), this was the logical point for the marriage. The Rittevon woman must have been Oron Rittevon's aunt.
