Vurquan Nomru (pronounced VUHRR-kwan NOHM-roo) is a luarin nobleman of the Copper Isles, and is referred to as Duke Nomru and Old Iron Bum from his days in the army because of his stubbornness. As it were, he was one of most prominent generals of the Copper Isles in his day. He was immensely wealthy and powerful and was the male head of a very prominent noble household.

Biography

Early life

Nomru served in the army when he was younger and became quite a famed general and veteran. At some point he inherited a dukedom, and became Duke Nomru. He was raised to believe in kindness and to not be disdainful of other people based on race and age, even though he was luarin. This trait he shared with Mequen and Winnamine, the Duke and Duchess Balitang.

Prior to the exile of the Balitang family by King Oron, Nomru was good friends with Dovasary Balitang and played chess with her often.

Return of the exiles

When the Balitang family returned, Nomru was very welcoming to them. He stood up for them to Imajane Rittevon, the princess regent and sister of the king, along with Countess Tomang, Count Tomang, and other very influential and wealthy people of the Isles. Princess Imajane was forced to acquiesce and allow Saraiyu and Elsren Balitang to live away from the Grey Palace at Balitang House. Duke Nomru and Dove rekindled their friendship, and they discussed politics and played chess together.

Nomru was arrested and thrown into Kanodang, the city's prison, when he made a remark to Imajane saying that the princess regent should be kinder to her subjects, and that utilizing fear and intimidation tactics would only get one so far. Kindness would tempt anyone to follow a ruler's lead. Imajane was angry, and arrested him almost without thinking. This sparked anger among the luarin nobility, as they recognized that if someone as powerful as Duke Nomru could be arrested just for saying something, then no one was safe. This made many who would have sided with the Rittevon family in a heartbeat, turn to the Luarin conspiracy.

Alianne of Pirate's Swoop devised a plan to break Nomru out of prison, recognizing that since Nomru was a luarin duke, the regents would first suspect the luarin nobility of breaking him out. Nomru stayed with Imgehai Qeshi at the temple of the Great Mother Goddess and hid there. Nuritin Balitang brought him and Qeshi to one of the raka conspiracy's meetings. Nomru recognized the Ulasim Dodeka was the leader of the group.

Part in the raka rebellion

Nomru was instrumental in the raka rebellion. He made a remark that Rubinyan Jimajen should not have allowed Imajane to decide a matter of state. Fesgao Yibenu set him straight, saying that the raka conspiracy's goal was not to set a luarin man on the throne, but a queen of raka heritage. Duke Nomru showed that he was aware of the Kyprish Prophecy and said "Of course, the one who is twice-royal"—referring to Dovasary Balitang. As he recognized the great intelligence in Dove, he thought that she would do very well for them all.

He fought during the raka attack on the Grey Palace and lived to see Queen Dovasary crown herself queen of the Copper Isles.

Physical description

"His nose was an eagle's beak set under two sharp brown eyes, his sensuous mouth set in a firm line. His clothing was simple bronze cotton and silk. Like the other male nobles, he worke no sword and dagger in the royal presence, but there were dents in his belt where they normally hung. For a Kyprin noble he showed uncommon restraint in his jewelry, keeping it to a single gold earring, a chain, and gold rings on his index fingers and thumbs."
—Aly's desciption of Duke Vurquan Nomru (p. 79)[src]

Appearances

Nomru has only appeared as a supporting character in Trickster's Queen, the second installment of the Trickster Series.
