Vinson of Genlith (pronounced VIHN-sun of GEHN-lith, hard "g") was a third-year page when Keladry of Mindelan, or "The Girl", began her training. He was staunchly against it, allying himself with boys such as Joren of Stone Mountain, and Zahir ibn Alhaz. They formed a sort of anti-Kel group, which Garvey of Runnerspring and Quinden of Marti's Hill joined later—Zahir later left, calling their antics "childish". Vinson, Joren, and whomever was in the group at the time, made attempts to drive her out. They fought with her and antagonized her for her first two years. When Vinson was made a squire after passing his big examinations, his knight-master became Sir Nualt of Rosemark.

After Kel had taken on Lalasa Isran for a maid, Vinson happened upon the girl while she was sewing. He assaulted her, forcing the birds to track down Kel. She had left long scratches down his face. Kel was livid and threatened to report him, much to the horror of Lalasa, who insisted that she would only be ostracized by other servants. Vinson countered that his family was powerful in court, having come from a long line of advocates. She threatened him that if he ever tried to rape Lalasa again, she would do more than report him.

His violence against women did not stop with Lalasa, as he raped one woman in the Lower City of Corus for "taunting him" and assaulted two others. He was never caught for either of these before his Ordeal of Knighthood.

When the Chamber of the Ordeal made him undergo the pain he put the women through, he cried out, causing him to fail his Ordeal of Knighthood. After he left the chamber he asked for an audience with the Lord Magistrate, Turomot of Wellam. He confessed his crimes before the court.
