Duke Vedris IV of Emelan is the ruler of Emelan and member of a line which has ruled over the country for eight hundred years[1]. He is Sandrilene fa Toren's great-uncle[2] through her father, Mattin fer Toren, his favorite nephew. He has three sons.
The wife of Duke Vedris died. Afterwards he let court functions go. His nobles socialize on their own estates.[3]
The Duke has a close familial relationship with his great-niece, Sandry, and a friendship with Baron Erdogun fer Baigh, his seneschal. Yazmín Hebet is his lover. He also fosters a friendship with Trisana Chandler, Sandry's foster-sister; he gives her books from his library and has commented that he believes she's mildly infatuated with him. He has suffered a past heart-attack and his health remains fragile. Healers have warned him that he may not survive a second heart-attack, and would certainly not survive a third. In his younger days he was known as a pirate chaser.
