Vanget haMinch (pronounced VAN-jeht hah-MINCH) is a Tortallan nobleman and is General of the Northern Armies. He is mainly responsible for Tortall's northern border with Scanra and Galla. He is a member of the powerful haMinch family.

Biography[]

Early trouble with Scanra[]

He led the armies during the Scanran War and was the main battle strategist and tactician. During the early skirmishes before war was declared, Vanget was on the main defense. When he heard that King Jonathan and Queen Thayet had ventured too far away from the Royal Progress, he met with them and told them to leave, knowing that they had come too far into dangerous territory on purpose. King Jonathan became angry, but not at Vanget, and more at his inability to do anything. Vanget interrupted Jonathan and said that he was doing what he could, but he couldn't fight Scanrans and protect the monarchs at the same time. Vanget also understood that as Jonathan was connected to the Dominion Jewel, people would think that the land would fall if the king died.[1]

After Keladry of Mindelan and Sergeant Domitan's squad were able to defeat a killing device, one of the first any of the Tortallans had ever seen, Vanget was called to Fort Giantkiller along with Numair Salmalín, in order to inspect the device.[2]

The Scanran War[]

Duties[]

War was declared officially in early 460 HE, which meant that many knights and regular army soldiers were sent to fight at the border. Vanget, as the General, was in charge of everything in the north. If the Scanrans did not have killing devices, and it was only a matter of armies or navies, the Tortallans would have defeated them long before, but with the metal monsters, the Scanrans were nearly unstoppable and the Tortallan forces suffered huge losses. He took Northwatch Fortress as his headquarters, but participated in many large-scale battles with the Scanrans.

Battles[]

  • Battle of the Vassa Plain: On April 28, 460, two days after the destruction of Fort Giantkiller, Vanget defeated three thousand of the enemy on the Vassa Plain at the border. At first, the Tortallans were losing horribly, and 98 men died before Vanget had to give the order to retreat. During their retreat, the Scanrans gave chase, but broke formation. This gave the Tortallans the opportunity to turn right around and hack them to pieces.[3]

General Vanget survived the early part of the war, and managed to defeat several Scanran armies after the destruction of Blayce the Gallan and the killing devices. It is unknown if he survived the entire war, but it is assumed that he did, as after the killing devices were removed from the equation, the Tortallans had the far superior force.

Appearances[]

General Vanget appeared and was mentioned several times in Squire. He was also mentioned several times in Lady Knight, but never appeared.
