Upton Oakbridge (pronounced UP-tuhn) is the Master of Ceremonies in Tortall and oversees parties, banquets, and other social events that are thrown by the King and Queen. He is also the pages' main instructor for court manners and serving decorum and etiquette. He is their overlord when they serve at Midwinter banquets.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Oakbridge became Master of Ceremonies after Alanna the Lioness completed her training. He became Master of Ceremonies, a very prestigious position, and oversaw the pages' instruction in manners and etiquette. He was responsible with organizing and executing the parties thrown by the King and Queen, and had a veritable army of pages and squires to complete the service. He also held classes where he taught the pages bowing and etiquette.

The arrival of The Girl[]

When Keladry of Mindelan, the first girl page since Alanna the Lioness, arrived to begin her probationary period, Oakbridge at first treated her with disdain like Wyldon of Cavall and other teachers, calling her "probationary page" and refusing to refer to her by her proper pronoun. When he discovered that Kel knew a great deal of Yamani culture, he was more accepting of her, and had her help him instruct the pages in Yamani customs, due to the upcoming marriage between Crown Prince Roald and Chisakami, a Yamani princess. For the class's reading material, he used a book on the Yamanis that was written by Piers of Mindelan, Kel's father, and the ambassador who negotiated the alliance between Tortall and the Yamani Islands.

During one year when Keladry was a full-blown page, Oakbridge oversaw their service during the Midwinter feasts and banquets. It was at this time when Page Joren and his friends decided to sabotage Kel and her friends. This made Oakbridge furious and had them all have more lessons and practices for banquet serving and manners. This did not sit well with any of the pages, because these lessons cut into their free time.

Traits and Characteristics[]

Kel noted that with all the disasters and his prophecies predicting everything will go wrong with a service, that Oakbridge thrived on disaster and finding people seated in the wrong places. He also could be irritatingly kind when he felt someone was out of joint or ill.
