"You think Turomot would look into changing the law? Usually I have to wheedle and grant all kinds of concessions before he'll so much as ask his clerks to look up precedents. He's the stickiest of the conservatives."
King Jonathan referring to Duke Turomot in the matter of changing an unfair law.[src]

Duke Turomot of Wellam (pronounced TUR-oh-moht of WELL-ahm) was the Lord Magistrate and the chief examiner of the pages around the time when Keladry of Mindelan was a page. Duke Turomot is married and has several children as well as grandchildren. His great-nephew is Sacherell of Wellam.[1] Duke Turomot would also have been a contemporary of King Jason III, King Jonathan's paternal grandfather.

Biographical Information[]

Early life[]

Not much is known about the Duke's early life, but he did have a wife, children, and grandchildren. He is also one of the most respected magistrates in the courts of law. He became a knight as is proper for the heir to a fiefdom, probably before he got involved with Tortallan law. When Keladry of Mindelan expressed her surprise that the stiff Duke could ever have been a knight, Raoul of Goldenlake teased her that the Lord Magistrate might not have been as stiff at one point in his life.

456 — 459 HE[]

In 456 HE, in response to the kidnapping of Lalasa Isran in order to force Keladry of Mindelan to either be late for or miss her examinations, the Duke made the ruling that as foul play was involved, Kel would be allowed to take the examinations to become a squire. He was very upset and disgruntled by the cheering and the amount of commotion that came out of this declaration, and threatened to have anyone else who made such an unseemly display from henceforth ejected from his presence.

In the December of that year it was revealed that Joren of Stone Mountain paid off two men to kidnap Lalasa Isran for the purpose of making Keladry late for her examinations. Even though he was a conservative, Turomot was angered that Joren would have so little respect for the law, and tried to fine him with as many concessions as possible in order to punish him. Raoul of Goldenlake argued that Turomot would be more likely to change the law that only fined noble perpetrators for kidnapping, as Joren had made both him, the law, and the Crown look stupid with his display.

In 459 HE, Turomot instructed Kel in the Code of Chivalry, and sat with her through her vigil in order to discourage potential perpetrators of any foul play.

Beliefs[]

He is strict concerning the law and behavior in his courtroom. He is also a conservative and doesn't like changes, least of all changes in existing law. Even though he is conservative, he is also very honorable. Although many of his faction would have leapt at the chance to have Keladry removed from training regardless of circumstances, he did not due to the alleged foul play and sabotage that kept her from completing her exams. This is also shown when he offered to sit with her at her vigil, in order to deter any potential perpetrators of wrongdoing. Turomot has a great sense of honor and a good moral code, even in relation to whether or not a woman was fit to be a knight.

Physical Description[]

"In walked an old man wearing a long, fur-collared, maroon wool robe and a velvet cap with ear-flaps. Over the shoulders of his robe he wore a heavy gold chain of office, its pendant marked with the crossed gavel and sword of the Royal Magistrates."

Duke Turomot appears in Page. He later appears again in Squire.
