Thom of Pirate's Swoop (pronounced TOM), born in 443 HE, is the oldest son of George Cooper, Baron of Pirate's Swoop, and Alanna the Lioness, the King's Champion of Tortall. He has two siblings, the twins Alan and Alianne of Pirate's Swoop. Through Aly, he has two nieces and a nephew, Ulasu, Junim, and Ochobai Crow.
Biography
Early life
Thom was born in 443 HE while his parents were on a mission. His father, George, had to deliver Thom himself[1]. Thom is named after his deceased maternal uncle, Thom of Trebond, a mage who studied at the City of the Gods. He grew up closely with the princes and princesses of Tortall and was closest in age to Prince Roald, Princess Kalasin, and Prince Liam. He liked being with Prince Roald and Princess Kally more, as it made him feel older than his younger siblings and the other royal children.
When he was six years old he met Veralidaine Sarrasri, a thirteen year old girl who had wild magic and the ability to talk to animals. This was entrancing to him, Roald, and Kally, and they followed Daine around everywhere she went while she was staying at Pirate's Swoop[2]. He was also entrance by the dragonling Skysong, nicknamed Kitten, after Daine saved and adopted her.
Life choices
He did not choose either his mother's or his father's life paths, and did not become a knight or a spy, even though he was the oldest of the Pirate's Swoop children and thus heir. This breaks the usual tradition among noble families in sending the eldest son to become a knight. Instead, he became enamored with education and his Gift and studied at the royal university under Harailt of Aili, the dean, and Numair Salmalín, his parents' close friend.
In 463 HE, he was part of the delegation sent from Tortall to welcome the new Queen of the Copper Isles, Dovasary Balitang, to the throne. He saw his sister, now the spymaster of the Copper Isles, again. Throughout the dinner that was had with the members of their family and friends, Thom talked to two year old Sarralyn Salmalín about stars[3].
Physical description
Thom had inherited the red hair of his mother and uncle[4].
Personality and traits
Thom, like his maternal uncle, is primarily interesting in academics and magic. Aly described him as being so entrenched in his studies that he didn't notice the newer and odder fashions that his fellow university students sported, like the blue hair trend that Aly got into. His only reaction to Aly's blue hair was that their mother would not like what she saw[5].
Even so, he has a sense of humor. When he was 10 years old, his tutor had him write out a timeline of the realm of Tortall. Each king is graced with Thom's amusing commentary. At the end, he even puts the birth dates of himself and his siblings, to which an adult (presumably the tutor) says that ideally they would not be on a list of royalty.
