Thanen of Halleburn was a Tortallan nobleman who lived during the 3rd century HE. He was Lord of Halleburn, and had at least one daughter, Nomalla of Halleburn, a knight of Tortall.
Biography
Conspiracy
Thanen and his lady were part of a rebel conspiracy and plot designed to overthrow King Roger and place the king's younger brother, Prince Baird, on the throne. He was part of the noble core of the conspiracy that included Dewin and Aeldra of Queensgrace, as well as Graeme and Elyot of Aspen Vale. He was upset that the other conspirators failed to capture the members of the Three Rivers Hunt, and ordered Dolsa Silkweb to bring them to Halleburn. Once she captured them, the conspiracy was now far along enough for them not to worry about hurting Prince Gareth, who now lived as a slave at Fief Halleburn and served the conspirators openly.
He had the idea to wed Sabine of Macayhill to Prince Baird, as the lady knight's maternal grandfather, the Lord of Masbolle, had changed his will to leave quite a lot of money to her after he died. She pretended to acquiesce at first, but then allied herself with Nomalla of Halleburn after the other lady knight defected from the conspiracy, in order to get her colleagues out of the castle.
Farmer Cape managed to get word to Cassine Catfoot that they were being imprisoned at Fief Halleburn. The Earl of King's Reach was the first responder, and amassed an army to lay siege on Halleburn Castle. When the siege was successful, Lord Thanen evaded justice by jumping off the highest balcony and plummeting to his death.
Physical description
He is described as having deepset bright blue eyes, a mouth with nearly invisible lips, and well groomed white hair at the side of his head.
Personality and traits
Lord Thanen expected absolute obedience by those around him, especially his daughter, Nomalla. He was a proud and ambitious man, and was seemingly behind most of the conspiracy, as Prince Baird seemed to have a few qualms about betraying his family, which Lord Thanen probably talked him out of. He was in charge even though the two other men of the noble core of the conspiracy were of higher rank, Prince Baird and Count Dewin.
When he lost, however, he did not have the fortitude to face the law, and instead left his family to the harsh punishment for his own crimes by committing suicide after losing to the Earl of King's Reach.
