Usage

This infobox is to be used for all Tortallan royals, and for Tortallan nobles who are not knights or solders. For nobles who are knights or soldiers, use the Knight and Soldier infoboxes, respectively, and place "Nobility" in the Rank field. For Circle Universe royals and nobles, use the Circle Noble/Royal infobox.

Fields

General Character Information

  • The image field, like all other fields, should be left blank if not available.
  • The name field defaults to the name of the article. It may be changed to the most common name used to refer to the character in the novels, i.e. Baird of Queenscove's "name" field may be "Duke Baird". The infobox name should fit on a single line.
    • Courtesy titles, like "Prince" Bronau or "Lady" Gwynnen, should be included with the character's name in the title of their infobox.
  • The universe field should be "Tortallan Universe".

Titles/Rulership

  • Title fields not preceded by "sec" should be used for a character's most recent title.
  • Title fields preceded by "sec" should be used for former titles. Titles and positions like "Knight Commander" or "Ambassador" belong in the position or otherpositions fields, with tenure dates listed in posservice or as a comment, respectively. See below for more information on how to fill out the "position" fields.
  • The "titlenote" field is for official notes about the character's incumbency in their title (e.g. In own right, Consort, By right of husband, Regnant, Courtesy, etc). This is helpful in distinguishing between noblewomen who hold their own titles and those who have them only through marriage. Courtesy titles are unofficial titles assumed through custom, like calling a young nobleman "Lord", or calling the daughter of a king "Princess".
  • The titlebequeathedby field should only be used if the monarch who bequeathed the title to the character is known. If the monarch who bequeathed the title is unknown, leave this field blank.
  • The titlebequeathdate field should only be used for the date a title was bequeathed. If a date is not known, leave this field blank.
  • The subsidiary fields should be used for lesser concurrent titles, i.e. "Duke of Yamut" for Prince Kaddar. Place the highest ranked title first, followed by lower ranked titles separated by commas.
  • The style fields should only be used for formal forms of address used for specific titles, such as Her Imperial Majesty or His Grace.
  • The beginreign field should be used for the day/year when the character's rule began, prior to a coronation date. If the character's reign and coronation were held on the same day like with King Dunevon, use the coronation field for that single date and leave this field blank.
  • The coronation field should be used for a character's date of coronation (e.g. July, 438 HE). Use "unknown" if the ruler is still in power but their coronation date is not known.
  • The endreign field should only be used for the day/year when the character's rule ended. If the ruler is still in power, leave this field blank.
  • The tenure field should only be used to designate the length of time that non-monarch positions or ornamental titles were/have been held (e.g. 416 HE - 438 HE). Dates that rulers held power belong in the appropriate beginreign, coronation, and/or endreign fields.
  • The comonarch field should only be used for spouses of monarchs who jointly rule (e.g. Jonathan IV and Thayet of Conté). It should not be used for consorts of ruling monarchs.
  • The regent field should only be used when the reign of a ruler was presided over by regents. If a character was a regent, then that title belongs in the title or subsidiary fields.
  • The predecessor and successor fields may be used for monarchs or for holders of noble titles.
  • The heirapparent field should only be used for heirs who cannot be displaced in the line of succession.
  • The heirpresumptive field should only be used for heirs whose position as first the line of succession is conditional (e.g. daughters in male-primogeniture lines).
  • The champion and minister fields should only be used for monarchs who have a known "King's Champion" and/or "Prime Minister". If a ruler has had more than one of either, the most recent holder of the position should be listed first, will earlier holders of the positions separated by line breaks.

Positions

  • The position field should be used for nobles or royals who hold a specified post like "Lord High Magistrate" or "Governor".
  • The otherpositions field should be used for lesser concurrent positions or for previous positions held by the character.
  • The posmonarch field should be used to designate for which ruling monarch a position was served, as often a new monarch will choose their own people to hold high official positions.
  • The posservice field should be used for time of service spent in the positions listed in the position field. Only use this field if there is a single "position" listed. If multiple positions are listed in the "position" field, add comments after each position with the dates of service. Number of years served, or dates of service, are both appropriate to use in this field. If service is still ongoing, use "- present" in this field or as a comment to a position.
  • The pospredecessor and possuccessor fields should be used for predecessors and succcessors to positions listed in the position field. If either is unknown, leave that field blank.

Biographical Information and Physical Description

  • Typically, use the birthname field for the birth names of male characters only whose name has changed, such as Coram Smythesson becoming Coram of Trebond. Only use the birthname field if the infobox name differs from the character's birth name.
  • For female characters, use the maidenname field for their unmarried last name/fiefdom only.
  • The honorific field should only be used for honorary titles like "duani" or "Master".
  • The epithet field should only be used for significant nicknames or titles that embody the characteristics of the character (e.g. "The Lioness").
  • The codename field should only be used for know Shadow Service agents (e.g. John Juggler or Birdsong). Use this field for aliases that are used as part of spy activities. For all other aliases, use the "alias" field.
  • The alias field should only be used for names used by the character that would not be considered nicknames or epithets (e.g. Alan or Aly Homewood). Nicknames and epithets belong in their respective fields.
  • The death field should be left blank if the character is still alive. Use "unknown" if this information is not known.
  • The race field should be left blank unless the character belongs to a race like "Bazhir", "K'miri", or "Luarin". These are races that are different from nationalities.
  • The species field is only necessary if the character is not human.
  • The nationality field should only be used if the character's nationality is known. If a character has changed nationalities, the newest should be listed first with previous nationalities separated by line breaks. If a character's nationality is not known, leave this field blank.
  • The gift field should only be used for the color of a Tortallan character's magic. Use "unknown" if this information is not known. If the character has no Gift, leave this field blank.
  • The magic field is the equivalent of the gift field for those Tortallans possessing wild magic or the Sight.
  • The specialty field should be used for Gifted Tortallan Universe characters whose magic has a known special use/purpose (e.g. Healing or War).
  • The othertrait field should be used for defining physical characters that do not fall into the other "Physical Description" categories (e.g. scars, tattoos, missing finger, muscularity, etc).

Family Information

  • The house field should be used for noble or royal families, like the "Conté family" or the "Trebond family".
  • Most names, in all family information fields, should be written using the most recent full name of the character, with the option of writing their name in the format "title firstname" for royals and nobles. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
    • When using the ancestors, descendants, and other fields, comments should be placed after the names to indicate known relationships (e.g. "great-uncle", "second cousin"). If a character's direct relationship is not known, no comment should be added.
  • Use a † symbol after the names of all characters who are deceased when last mentioned in the novels. This symbol should not be used for characters who were alive when last seen, even if they would be dead in current times. Do not use † in 5th century Tortallan Universe character infoboxes simply because the referenced character lived in the 3rd century; only use it if the referenced character died during the period of time covered in the 3rd century-based novels.
  • The ancestors field should only include individual characters' names, not family lineages.
    • The ancestors field should be organized earliest to latest, from top to bottom, with each name separated by a line break.
    • Family lineages belong in the house field, with the most recent house listed first and previous houses separated by line breaks.
  • The siblings, children, adoptive children, grandchildren, descendants, godschildren, and other fields should be organized eldest to youngest, from top to bottom, with each name separated by a line break.
  • The companion field is for life-partners who are not married.
  • The animals field should be used for horses/pets and should include a comment stating the type of animal. ex: (dog)
  • The patron field should be used for patron gods of characters, i.e. "Kyprioth" for George Cooper or "Great Mother Goddess" for Alanna the Lioness.

General Affiliation

  • The rank field should only be used to state classes (e.g. nobility, commoner, merchant, etc), temple/school position (e.g. initiate, dedicate, etc), or "Knight" for royal knights.
  • The estates field should be used to list all fiefs that belong to the character or the character's family.
  • The residence field may be used for a specific building (e.g. the Tortallan Royal Palace), or simply a location/city/town/country, (e.g. Queensgrace).
  • The tribe field is specific to Bazhir tribespeople, born or adopted. Use "unknown" if the character's tribe is not known.

  • The occupation field should only be used for commoners or for those nobles who work for a living (e.g. teachers, seamstresses, bakers, etc).
  • The "pagesponsoredby" field should be used to state the page sponsor of the character. If the character's sponsor is not known, leave this field blank.
  • The "pagesponsorto" field should be used to state who the character sponsored. If the character did not sponsor another page, leave this field blank.
  • The district field may be used for governor's districts, guard districts (for nobles), or rogue districts.
  • The affiliation field should be used for associated unrelated persons or for events or places with which the character is connected that do not belong in another field.

Military Affiliation

  • The militaryrank field should only be used to state military ranks (e.g. Sergeant, Captain, Commander, etc).
