Skysong, also known as Kitten, is a dragonet (young dragon) that Daine took in after the Siege of Pirate's Swoop. Since then Daine has cared for Kitten and she has become family to Daine.

She appears in all four installments of The Immortals quartet and is the protagonist of the short story The Dragon's Tale.

Biography

Skysong was born during the Siege of Pirate's Swoop. Her mother Flamewing was pulled into the Mortal Realms while pregnant with Skysong, which lead to a miscarriage. Daine used her Wild Magic to bring the baby, back to life. Flamewing battled the pirates in return, dying in the process. Following the battle, Daine took on Skysong as her charge[1].

Physical description

General appearance

She is normally colored sky blue. As with all dragons, her color changes to reflect her moods. By the age of sixteen she has also learned to change her color at will[2]. Her eyes have been described as having slit-pupils, like a cat, and are either blue or amber-colored. In the last book which she was described, her body was two feet long, with an additional foot of tail. She can walk on all four legs, or just her hind legs.

Skysong's color according to mood

  • Blue - Normal appearance or calm
  • Pale Blue - Tiredness
  • White Blue - Exhausted
  • Grey - Sulky or gloomy
  • Scarlet - Enraged
  • Pink - Frightened
  • Yellow - Embarrassed

Skills and abilities

Skysong was still an infant dragon, and would remain one until she was at least thirty years, therefore her wings were not fully developed and she was flightless.

She has magical abilities controlled by whistling. Kitten can whistle locks open, and can neaten a person's appearance. During the first decade and half of her life, she has also learned greater magics like creating protecting barriers or breaking magical spells[2]. Skysong could, even as an infant, force wyverns to do her will[3]. Another interesting attribute of hers is that before Flamewing left Skysong into Daine's care, she imbued Daine's name into every inch of Skysong so that all; immortals, dragons and gods alike knew that her new mother was Daine.

She cannot communicate mind-to-mind with Daine because she was too young, but she could speak the dragon language. Kitten could understand humans and animals, however.[4] Still Daine and other close friends like Numair's horse Spots could understand Kitten perfectly well by her gestures and the sounds she makes. While visiting Carthak with her foster parents, Kitten met an ancient opal dragon who gives her a scale which enabled Kitten to speak the mind language with Daine, Numair and animals[2]. At that time Kitten was about sixteen years of age. This new ability made Kitten far more advanced than other dragons her age.

Relationships

Her mother was a dragon named Flamewing,[5] who died as a result of the Siege and Battle of Pirate's Swoop in 449 HE shortly after giving birth to Kitten, and Daine now cares for her. When she gave Skysong to Daine, Flamewing imprinted Daine's name on ever particle of Skysong's being so that dragons, immortals, and gods would know that she rightfully belonged with Daine. Her other relatives are her grandmother, Wingstar, and her grandfather, Diamondflame. They both live in the Dragonlands. While Kitten has visited her dragon relatives, she lives with Daine, Numair and their children and considers them her family.

Kitten has also a very close bond to Numair's horse, Spots. She understands when he is bored or exasperated by humans who don't understand that he is more intelligent than normal horses due to Daine's influence. This might probably be because Kitten herself feels often similarly.
