Shaman were the Bazhir tribes' mages. They were usually Gifted. It was tradition that the person who killed the last shaman replaced him in that position so that the tribe wouldn't be without a shaman's protection. A shaman could also train a new shaman himself. In fact the tribe's shaman was the only person who was allowed to teach other gifted Bazhir the use of their magic.
With her arrival at the tribe of the Bloody Hawk, Alanna of Trebond changed many of the traditional aspects of a shaman's position. The most important probably being that she and her two students, Kara and Kourrem, after her were the first female shamans in known Bazhir history. Through her there also began a school for shamans.
