Serenity was the owner of Ladyshearth Lodgings located on Coates Lane in the Deep Harbor District in Port Caynn. It's where Beka Cooper and Clara Goodwin stayed while investigating the counterfeit money which was suspected to come from the Port. Serenity and the Provost's Guard had an agreement concerning the rent; that's why several of the Port Caynn women Dogs stayed there permanently.[1]

So far she only appears in Bloodhound.

Biography

When she was younger Serenity dedicated her life to the Great Mother Goddess and eventually became the First Priestess of the Mother in one of the temples. Eventually she became too old to greet visitors on the great holidays. She also became weary of factions and struggles in the temple. Thus she retired, although she still had some power within the temple in 247 HE. She offered Clara Goodwin and Rebakah Cooper to help them with her remaining influence if they needed anything the temple could provide.[2]

By the time Goodwin and Beka came to Port Caynn for their investigations in September of 247 HE, Serenity owned a well-going lodginghouse, Ladyshearth Lodgings, and had an agreement with the Provost's Guard which caused many female Dogs to stay at her place.

Physical description

Serenity was a short, plump woman with dark hair that was turing gray by late 247 HE[3]. She had a musical voice.[4]

Traits and personality

Serenity was essentially a good-natured person, who was kind to others. However, she could also get stern, as shown when she didn't allow Beka to feed the local pigeons in the house. She also had a sharp mind, not believing the tale that Beka and Goodwin were only in Port Caynn to study local Dog work, but immediately realizing that they had some more important business in the city, when Pearl Skinner sent men to spy on the house.

It seems as though Serenity belonged to those people being prejudiced against pigeons, because she told Beka quite sternly not to continue feeding the birds in the house after Berna told Serenity that Beka had done so once.[5] However she explained herself with the argument that the neighbours wouldn't like it; it's questionable if the neighbours were really her only concern, or if she herself also disliked pigeons.[4]

Abilties

Serenity possessed the gift[6]. Her gift enabled her both to do defensive as well as offensive magic, providing protection for her lodgings via shielding spells and through the ability to "know when strangers watch [the house] with ill intent". She was also capable to blind people permanently with her magic, which she did when Pearl Skinner sent two spies to watch her house because Beka and Goodwin were staying at her place. In addition to this she owned a scrying bowl and knew how to use it; it was through this bowl that she learned to whom their watchers reported.[4]
