Sir Quinden of Marti's Hill (pronounced KWIHN-denn of MAHR-tees Hill) started his page training at the Royal palace at the same time that Keladry of Mindelan started hers, in the autumn of 452 HE.

Biographical Information[]

Training for Knighthood[]

He was sponsored by Zahir ibn Alhaz, one of Joren's cronies at the beginning. Even then, it seemed he was not immune to Joren's bullying, as Kel caught Joren and Garvey of Runnerspring bullying him one time. Even so, he never joined Kel's study group, but instead became a part of Joren's anti-Kel posse. He also used the hazing custom to further bullying among the pages.

Quinden tried to sabotage Kel whenever he could, as shown in his performance during a mock-fight in which Kel was commanding his team. He was un-remorseful about this and still stuck to his conclusion that he was in the right. He, along with Garvey and Vinson of Genlith, were not very sly when it came to the sabotage, using Joren as their brains. They were not a part of Joren's plan to make Kel miss her big exams by hiring men to kidnap Lalasa Isran, Kel's maid.

Quinden passed his big exams in the same year that Kel did, becoming a squire in the spring of 456 HE. It is unknown who became his knight-master. He became a knight in the Midwinter of 460, having passed his Ordeal of Knighthood.

Scanran War[]

Quinden fought in the Scanran War against Maggur Rathhausak and Blayce the Gallan. He journeyed north with Kel and her friends, and showed his dislike of commoners, calling them thieves and beggars. Neal called him an "obnoxious canker-blossom" and told him to "ooze somewhere else", to which Quinden responded by spitting on the ground and leaving. It is revealed that Quinden is the heir to Marti's Hill, when Kel expressed her pity of its people once he does inherit. Of course, this goes on with the tradition amongst noble families of having the oldest son and heir complete knight training. Younger sons were given more freedom to choose their destinies, as was the case with Domitan of Masbolle.

Later on, when Keladry journeyed into Scanra in order to rescue her refugees, along with Tobeis Boon and company, they hid from a Tortallan patrol that was led by Quinden. Tobe noted that if Kel's company had been the enemy, the patrol would have been dead by then, and claimed that they should've had scouts. Kel agreed, and promised that she would inform Quinden's commanding officer of the slip-up if they returned from Scanra.

Traits and Characteristics[]

Quinden is described as being blond and impish-looking. He, along with Joren's cronies, were incredibly unpleasant, and he seemed to have the bearings of a noble who would not care about the people he is sworn to protect, at least if they are commoners.
