Piers of Mindelan (pronounced peers of MIHN-duh-lahn) is a Tortallan nobleman, and holds the title Baron of Mindelan. He is the father of 9 children, including Keladry of Mindelan, the realm's second lady knight in over a century. Baron Piers is married to Ilane of Seabeth and Seajen, and was the ambassador to the Yamani Islands.

Biography[]

Early life[]

The Mindelan family is recently ennobled, and were previously merchants. Piers's grandparents were merchants to the bone, and the rest of the family are still common-blood.[2]

It is unknown if he ever went through knighthood training, but it is assumed that he did not. He became an ambassador instead of a warrior, and concerned himself with diplomacy. At some point he married Ilane of Seabeth and Seajen, the daughter of an older noble house.

Marriage and children[]

Piers and Ilane deeply loved each other, and had 9 children. His first, Anders, was born by at least 427 HE, at the latest. His three eldest sons became knights.

Ambassador for the Yamani Islands[]

The King and Queen of Tortall appointed Piers the ambassador to the Yamani Islands, and he stayed there for six years. His eldest sons did not come with him or his wife to the Islands, as they were busying themselves with knight training. Anders ran the fief while he was gone. His daughters did accompany him and his wife, including his eldest Patricine, who later married a Yamani nobleman. At first, negotiations were tense, and the emperor of the Islands did not give in easily. When his wife rescued the Gods' Swords from Scanran pirates, things changed. An alliance was forged and a marital alliance was planned due to the work of Baron Piers. It is also assumed that because of the baron's work, the Islands sent soldiers to help Tortall during the Immortals War.

Return home[]

Piers and Ilane returned with their children in early 452 HE, an alliance struck between the two countries. Kel voiced a wish to become a knight, and both Piers and Kel had to convince Ilane that this was something Kel actually wanted to do. Piers wrote to the king and to Wyldon of Cavall, the training master. When Lord Wyldon and the king decreed the Kel could try, but she must be put on probation, Piers knew this was unfair to his daughter. He also accompanied her to the palace to become acquainted with the training master.

Legacy[]

Without the work of the Mindelan family, an alliance would not have formed between the two countries. Piers also wrote a book about Yamani customs that was used to teach the pages by Upton Oakbridge, the Master of Ceremonies.

Physical description[]

Piers shared Kel's hazel eyes and like her he had brown hair, although his was darker. Also like his daughter he had a delicate nose. Piers was a small, stocky man;[3] only five feet four inches tall.[1] He was shorter than his wife, Ilane of Mindelan. His daughter Kel had grown to be taller than him while she was still a page.

Appearances[]

He appears in the first three installments of the Protector of the Small quartet, First Test, Page and Squire.
