Oron Rittevon (pronounced OH-rohn ritt-EHV-onn) was King of the Copper Isles in the mid-400s HE. He was a member of House Rittevon, the luarin ruling family of the Isles. He had many children, but none of them were alive by the autumn of 463 HE. He was known pejoratively as The Mad King.

Biography

Early life

As a member of House Rittevon, Oron grew up with the extremely racist attitudes of his family. These attitudes would later show during his time as King. Oron was the first cousin of Mequen Balitang, but as the Balitang duke was so much younger than he was, it is doubtful that they were close. It is unknown when exactly he took the throne, but it must've been by 438 HE[1].

Reign and policies

When Oron took the throne, presumably by underhanded means, he was every bit as corrupt and cruel as the previous Rittevon rulers. He did nothing to better the lives of his people, and only focused on the livelihoods of himself and the luarin nobility, if that. He had three wives, all of whom he had executed for believed treason, and had many children. He had his son Hanoren executed because he dreamed that his son turned into a rat and bit him. He did not have a loving relationship with his children, and even fostered hatred between them and encouraged their rivalries. This is because he believed that if his children liked each other, they would band together and have him overthrown.

In 462 HE, he had the Balitang family exiled because he claimed that there were treasonous plots and whisperings going on under their roof. He ordered them to give him very expensive monetary gifts in order to convince him of their loyalty and devotion. Even with the new gifts of money, he still didn't feel safe and he exiled them from Rajmuat, the capital, to Tanair on Lombyn Island. Alianne of Pirate's Swoop was amused as even though everyone thought Oron was mad, his ravings were still quite correct when it came to the Balitang family since they housed key members of the raka conspiracy, whose goal it was to restore a queen of the Haiming Dynasty to the throne.

Personality and traits

Oron is seen as being quite paranoid and insane. Many people claim that this is because the Rittevons usually married their cousins or even their siblings, thus creating an inbred line.

Children

Oron had several children from at least three wives:

  • Hazarin Rittevon, briefly succeeded him in Trickster's Choice
  • Imajane Rittevon Jimajen, passed over due to being a daughter; wife of Rubinyan Jimajen
  • Dunevon Rittevon, succeeded his half-brother Hazarin and was briefly a boy-king during Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen
  • Hanoren Rittevon, mentioned in Trickster's Choice, full brother of Hazarin
  • Valmar Rittevon, third son, mentioned in The Realms of the Gods as a Copper Isles general and pawn of Uusoae
  • Deniau Rittevon, high admiral of the Copper Isles fleet during the Immortals War and pawn of Uusoae
  • Veranine Rittevon and Elspetra Rittevon, sisters of Imajane (not mentioned in the text)
  • Gordaina Rittevon, sister of Hazarin and Hanoren (not mentioned in the text)

There is conflicting information about Josiane Rittevon; she is mentioned in The Woman Who Rides Like a Man as being his third daughter. In Trickster's Choice, she is mentioned as being his niece.

Notes and references

  1. He is mentioned in passing during the course of The Woman Who Rides Like a Man in reference to Princess Josiane
