Olennika Potcracker is a Kugiskan cook-mage. Before coming to Kugisko, she was the imperial cook for Empress Berenene. In order to keep the empress from being assassinated, she created food and drink that would turn an unnatural color if poisoned, and roll toward the would-be murderer. She was thrown in the Syth one day in attempt to kill both her and the empress. Potcracker claims she had a vision of the goddess Yorgiry, and that the only reason she was alive to tell the tale was because she was saved by the goddess. She left the imperial court for Kugisko, and became the head cook for Yorgiry's Hospital, so that she could serve the goddess who saved her life.

When Jory Bancanor's ambient cooking magic is discovered by Daja Kisubo, Jory insists on having Olennika as her teacher. This is a bit of a problem, as Yorgiry's Hospital is inBlackfly Bog - a shady part of the city, and Potcracker seldom takes students. Nevertheless, Jory still sought after Olennika. To test the girl, Potcracker asks Jory to bring differen spides from unlabeled jars in her workroom. Jory passes and Potcracker agrees to take her on as a probationary student, to see if they both can work well togehter. Potcracker asks Daja to continue to teach her young student mediation, as it's too loud to do so in the hospital kitchens. Although Potcracker is a stern teacher, and works Jory hard, the girl is happy with her education and does the work gladly.

Olennika only appears in Cold Fire.

Magical Abilities

She is possibly a great-mage, as her food helped Berenene foil assassinations many times, something that the empress prized her for. Plus, after Bennat Ladradun set the fire in Yorgiry's Hospital, she was able to hold back a huge amount of heat and flame so that others could escape. She can also distinguish spices by magical feel, which is why none of the bottles in her workroom are labeled.
