Musenda Ogunsanwo[1] (pronounced moo-SEND-ah oh-goon-SAN-woh), also known as Sarge, was a very large black man in the service of the Crown of Tortall as a training master for the Queen's Riders. He had once been a Carthaki slave before running away to Tortall.

BiographyEdit

CarthakEdit

Musenda used to fight in the arenas of Carthak as a gladiator. He would ride an elephant named Ua into the colosseum. He met Arram Draper (later Numair Salmalín) when Arram was only ten years old and studying at the Imperial University of Carthak. Arram had fallen into the arena, and likely would have been found by the imperial guards and whipped. Musenda allowed the young Arram to ride with him on Ua, and brought him back to his family.[2]

The second time he met Arram was years later, when the adolescent had progressed in his learning. It was then that Arram first learned that Musenda was a slave.[3]

TortallEdit

Musenda eventually escaped Carthak for Tortall. At some point between 442 and 449 HE, he joined the Queen's Riders. By 449 HE, he was a sergeant and served as the training master for new recruits. He was in charge of the boys and was known among the Riders for his bellow, which could be heard across the Rider fields every morning. He fought in the Siege of Pirate's Swoop in 449 HE and was very badly injured. He would have died without magical healing, but he was able to be treated after the magical barriers over Pirate's Swoop were lifted to allow the healers to work.

He befriended Daine Sarrasri when she worked with the Riders, and was eventually the godsfather to Daine and Numair's firstborn child, Sarralyn.

Further informationEdit

Tamora Pierce once mentioned that Sarge replaced Buri as commander of the Riders after she quit, but this contradicts her other statements that Evin Larse followed Buri as commander[4].

His first name is a tribal name meaning "nightmare", from the Baduma in Africa.[5]
