Morrachane Ladradun (pronounced more-rah-CHAIN lay-DRAH-duhn) was the matriarch of House Ladradun, a Namornese merchant family based in the city of Kugisko. She had several sons, one of which, Bennat Ladradun, or Ben, she hoped would take over the fur empire while they both were alive. Morrachane died in 1039 KF and was killed by her son, Ben.
Morrachane married into the Ladradun family, and her husband was the father of Ben and her other sons. He was a gambler, though, and lost the entire estate and all of their money. It was Morrachane who was able to get the family back on its feet again and restore it to its former glory.
Her son Ben married a woman named Kofrinna, and he had children by her. Her younger sons relocated elsewhere in the empire, where they married and had children, but she never met their families. Morrachane was very attached to her grandchildren by Ben, and loved them dearly. Then, a fire killed Kofrinna and the children. Ben was distraught, and Morrachane was too before she remembered that she had a duty to the family.
She tried to tell him that it was his duty to remarry and to have more children so that House Ladradun could continue. Ben saw this tactic as cruel and began to really hate his mother. He left Kugisko and went to Pawel Godsforge, a famed Namornese fire-mage who instructed him to understand fire.
Ben's return to Kugisko
After some time, Ben returned to Kugisko, much to Morrachane's happiness. Much to her disappointment, however, she found out that Ben had no interest in remarrying nor running their business. Instead, he occupied himself with forming a Fire Brigade in order to fight fires in Kugisko. She was able to make him do some of the work, but he hated her even more for it, especially since she kept on pushing him to remarry.
Morrachane became good friends with members of House Bancanor, another wealthy merchant family of Kugisko. She was especially friendly to the Bancanor twin girls, Jorality and Niamara. She became acquainted with Daja Kisubo, the student of Frostpine who was a friend of Kolborn and Matazidah, when Daja was taking the twins around Kugisko so that they could choose their teachers. Morrachane was incredibly disapproving of this, and could hardly believed that Matazi Bancanor agreed to let her children choose their instructors, as it allowed for too much free will. This argument was put down when Daja took on her most snobby persona which was based on Sandrilene fa Toren and Dedicate Crane. This kind of speak was what Briar Moss called "snooty mage jabber". It worked on Morrachane, however, and it did force her to be quiet and to stop lecturing Daja and Jory.
Morrachane kept on acting superior around Daja, and turned down her nose at the girl's age and station.
Later on, Morrachane was killed by her son and was left in a burning building as her son escaped the city, only to return later to set another fire.
She is described as being 5 ft 5. She has a hard, tight face, an unsmiling mouth, a short nose and stern wrinkles. Her hair is strawish after being dyed blonde so many times in the Namornese fashion. She has pale gray-green eyes.
Personality and traits
Morrachane is not a kind woman. She is stern, strict, and sometimes incredibly cruel. The temperatures at all of her warehouses are kept cold, as she believed that happy servants meant less work. She also did not feed her workers well nor did she pay them well. Morrachane was immensely unkind to anyone whom she felt was beneath her, like Daja, but kind and genteel to whomever she thought was worth her while or equal to her station, such as members of the Bancanor family. She admired the Bancanor adults and was friends with them, but she saved her warmth for Jory and Nia Bancanor, insisting they call her "Aunt Morrachane". They noticed she wasn't really kind to anyone else, however.
Morrachane only appears as a minor antagonist in Cold Fire.
