Matazidah Bancanor

Template:Circle character Matazidah Bancanor (pronounced mah-TAH-zee-day BAN-kan-ohr), nicknamed Matazi (mah-TAH-zee) was born in Bihan to a lower class family. She married into House Bancanor, a wealthy banking and goldsmithing family based in Kugisko, Namorn.

Biography

Early life

As a member of the working class, Matazi was a seamstress. She met Dedicate Frostpine and his friend Kolborn Bancanor while they were in Bihan to study. She took Frostpine as her lover, but then moved onto Kol with Frostpine's blessing. She married Kol in Bihan.

Marrying into House Bancanor

Matazi had no idea how wealthy her husband was until she arrived into Namorn. She realized that the Bancanor family was one of the wealthiest merchant families of the empire, and very politically and economically powerful. Kol was the heir to all this wealth and station. She easily settled into this life and had four children, the twins Niamara and Jorality, as well as Peigine and Eidart. Bancanor House, the family's ancestral home was located in a wealthy part of Kugisko on Kadasep Island.

Guests come to stay

In 1039 KF, Matazi and Kol welcomed their old friend Frostpine to Kugisko and allowed him and his student Daja Kisubo to stay in their home. Daja was able to see their older twins Jory and Nia work magic. She created a mirror made of living metal that could see their magics. When it was discovered that Nia had ambient carpentry magic and Jory had ambient cooking magic, Matazi and Kol were happy but a bit rueful, as marriages among the wealthy Namornese took years to arrange, and several families that had expressed interest in the girls would turn mages down flat. Matazi thought of a good solution for Nia, and thought that they could arrange a marriage with one of Domanus Moykep's youngest son's children, as they were a shipbuilding family.

Matazi and Kol wrote up a list of possible teachers for the twins, so Daja could visit each one to see if they were willing to take students.

Physical description

Matazi is an extremely beautiful woman. As she is Bihani (or Bihanese), she has light brown skin, described as the color of coffee well lightened with cream and handfuls of dark crinkly hair. Her eyes are large and dark, over a slim nose. She has passed her looks onto her twin daughters, Jory and Nia. It is unknown exactly what her other two children look like.

Personality and traits

Matazi is a very warm person, and a loving mother. She takes news quite calmly—such as the magic in her eldest daughters—and she has a very gentle, but strong, presence. She mothers Daja, and she is very kind. She is also not snobbish in the least, about her husband's money, or her beauty. She does not use her beauty to gain power, but just wears it as if it isn't even there. This makes her even more beautiful, in the eyes of Daja.

Matazi only appears in Cold Fire. The Bancanor family is mentioned in The Will of the Empress by Saghad Ambros, the steward of Landreg.
