Spoiler Alert: The following section contains spoilers about a book not yet released.

Mastiff is the third and last volume in the Provost's Dog trilogy. It's publication date is set for 2010, although Tamora Pierce stated in December of 2009 that the novel will probably be realeased in spring or summer of 2011 at the latest and that Pierce was nearly finished writing it[1]. Originally the novel had been titled Elkhound, but Tamora Pierce decided that this choice of title didn't go along with the content anymore, because Elkhounds only tracked game and didn't bring it down like Mastiffs[2].

Content

"Beka and her friends will face their greatest and most important challenge ever when the young heir to the kingdom vanishes. They will be sent out of Corus on a trail that appears and disappears, following a twisting road throughout Tortall. It will be her greatest Hunt—if she can survive the very powerful people who do not want her to succeed in her goal."
—Original plot summary from Pierce's Website

Beka's partner in this book will be Matthias Tunstall. They'll also be accompanied by a mage called Farmer, whose gift is spezialized in horses[2], and they'll be searching for a very high-profile kidnap victim[3]. Their travels will bring them to the northern reaches of Tortall as well as to Tunstall's eastern hills.[4] They'll also have to pass through a swamp.[5]

When finishing Bloodhound Tamora Pierce herself didn't know yet if Beka would be romantically involved with someone at the end of Mastiff or not, stating that there were "circumstances that could make it hard for Beka to feel as if she were in love with someone in Mastiff".[6]
