Maggur Rathhausak (pronounced MAHG-grr roth-HOW-sak) was a Scanran warlord who originated from southern Scanra. He was instrumental in the Scanran War and was the main enemy of the Tortallan forces.

Biography[]

Pre-war[]

Maggur learned warfare in unspecified foreign lands, where he gained skills that helped him become a very effective commander. This was a far cry different from the usual Scanran raiding methods. He lived on Fief Rathhausak, a small set of lands with a daunting castle.

When he returned from his studies, he retrieved his mother and aunt from his fief and abandoned it for a time.

Warlord[]

Maggur became warlord of Scanra on the Bloody Throne by way of taking hostages. By threatening the families of the people he took, he garnered more followers and nobles and united his country. He first became warlord of the Southern clans of Scanra in November 455 HE, and then became King of all of Scanra in March 460 HE.[2]

He later enlisted the work of Blayce the Gallan, a necromancer who had been expelled from the City of the Gods for practicing dark magic. He gave Blayce his former lands and continued running the country and the war from Hamrkeng. Blayce made the killing devices by using the spirits of dead children.

After Keladry of Mindelan defeated Blayce and Stenmun Kinslayer at Castle Rathhausak, the war continued. The Scanrans had lost their advantage but they were still a force to be reckoned with due to King Maggur's military training. After several battles and small skirmishes over a four-year period, the war ended and Maggur was hunted by his own nobles.

Appearances[]

He never appeared in any of the novels personally, but was mentioned repeatedly in the latter half of the Protector of the Small quartet, where he was Tortall's enemy.

Notes and references[]

  1. Maggur died long after Blayce the Gallan did, and it is unknown exactly what year
  2. Timeline (Tortall)
