A mage is a fancy term for a wizard or witch, usually reserved for those with the gift. There are a few wildmages as well.
Mages are usually people that have enough magic to need training usually in a apprenticeship or at a university. Every mage has a different color of magic which is usually seen when the mage is using their magic. There is a range of mages based on the power that they are born with and many specialize in one area. Mages who attend universities acquire different colored robes based on how powerful they are.
