Duke Lohearn Mantawu (pronounced low-HURN MAN-tah-woo), called Topabaw (TOP-ah-bahw), was the feared luarin spymaster of the Copper Isles. He served House Rittevon from an unknown date to his death in 463 HE, when he fell from grace. His nickname was an allusion to his ability to inspire and create fear throughout the Isles.
It is unknown when Lohearn Mantawu was promoted to spymaster under the Rittevons, but it was perhaps during the reign of King Oron. As spymaster, Lohearn Mantawu was a terror, and was nicknamed for his trouble. He was seen as invincible and unstoppable to the raka conspiracy, who had lived in fear of him. It is unknown but probable that his intelligence for Oron caused the Balitangs ultimate exile, although Topabaw did not find enough to execute them, even though he could have.
When the Balitang family returned to Rajmuat on the request of Rubinyan Jimajen and his wife Imajane Rittevon, they noticed that the regents had made Examples out of members of the Ibadun family. It was speculated that Topabaw thought they were producing more than orchids on their lands and thus recommended to the regents to have them executed. Alianne of Pirate's Swoop had great plans for Topabaw, as she believed that she could bring him down. The other raka conspirators believed her to be mad, but let her continue with her plans anyway, thinking they would be useless.
Topabaw hastened to put a spy in the Balitang household upon their return. When the Balitangs were presented to the king and the regents at the Grey Palace, Aly was taken from the throne room and brought to Duke Lohearn Mantawu, who used truth spells on her. Aly didn't think much of his technique in interrogation and used a magical trick taught to her by Numair Salmalín in order to evade the truth spell in the tea she was given. She led Topabaw to believe that she hated the Balitangs, especially the raka members and that she would do anything to rise in status. Topabaw, who had no reason not to believe her, as he thought her drugged, gave her a position as a spy and ordered her to report to Grosbeak about the Balitangs. He gave her a purse of silver coins laced with listening spells, and when she asked for more, he yelled at her. Aly later threw the coins in with the man-eating fish later when the Balitangs were on their way back to the townhouse. Aly thought about him with disdain, as he was so sure of himself that he neglected to force her to swear a blood oath.
Topabaw became more and more desperate as the months wore on, as he had been hearing gossip spread by Aly and the other conspirators that the regents were losing faith with him and calling for new blood. The regents became unhappy with him, as they heard of the gossip as well. After the deaths of King Dunevon and Duke Elsren, Topabaw was made an Example. He was replaced by Rubinyan's personal spy Sevmire Ambau, whom Aly described as a pond fish who was thrown into the ocean.
Aly described Topabaw as being pallid and bony and in his late fifties.
Personality & Traits
His surety in his post and position made him careless and overconfident, which Aly capitalized on and exploited throughout her time in Rajmuat. He was also not a good interrogator, greedy, and unintelligent.
Lohearn Mantawu appeared in Trickster's Queen.
