Lianne of Conté, born Lianne of Naxen (pronounced lee-AHN of kohn-TAY/ NAKS-enn), was Queen of Tortall in the early 5th century HE, once her husband, King Roald V, succeeded King Jasson, until her death in 439 HE. She was a member of the Naxen family through birth, and the Conté family through marriage and was the sister of Duke Gareth. She only had one surviving child, Jonathan, who would go on to become a very influential ruler of Tortall.

Queen Lianne is the namesake of two of her descendants: her granddaughter Princess Lianne and her great-granddaughter Princess Lianokami.

Biography

Early life

Lianne of Naxen was born in 392 HE to one of the greatest ducal houses in Tortall, the Naxen family. Her older brother was Duke Gareth, the later training master of the pages and duke. Her parents, at least her father, predeceased her, as her brother was Duke of Naxen before her death.

Marriage and pregnancies

In 414 HE, at 19 years of age, she married Roald of Conté, becoming either a princess or Queen of Tortall (as it is unknown when exactly Roald succeeded his father, King Jasson). Her only child was Prince Jonathan of Conté, who was born in 416 HE.

From the beginning of her marriage Lianne had fertility problems and even miscarriages. Her son's birth wasn't an easy one. Afterwards she was advised against having other children but tried nonetheless to fulfill her duty to her husband to produce another heir to ensure the royal line. Lianne got pregnant again and gave birth to a stillborn in 419 HE. After this she couldn't get pregnant anymore.[1]

First bout of sickness

In 431 HE[2], an epidemic called the Sweating Sickness started to spread around Tortall. This time the illness had a magical element due to the machinations of Duke Roger, the ambitious and murderous nephew of King Roald. Queen Lianne had the illness before her son did, and when Prince Jon contracted it, it was quite a bad case and they almost lost him. The king and queen allowed Page Alan of Trebond to look after him, not knowing Alan was really Alanna.

After her son healed due to the help of Alanna's magical Gift, Lianne never seemed to get over her bout with the Sweating Sickness and she remained weakened.

Victim of Duke Roger

Duke Roger's desire to kill Queen Lianne did not end with the first bout of the Sweating Sickness. He continued to weaken her by use of powerful sorcery[3].

In 438 HE, when Alanna revealed herself to be a woman, King Roald and Queen Lianne did not approve of Alanna's attachment to their son. Lianne had her own machinations to wed Jonathan to a proper princess, and Josiane Rittevon of the Copper Isles was the queen's candidate for Jon. Her son was receptive to this, as he and Alanna had a big fight while staying in the Bloody Hawk camp of the Great Southern Desert. Lianne and Josiane mostly spent time together, and it was believed that they were planning the wedding.

Second life of Duke Roger and death

When Duke Roger was raised from the dead because of Thom of Trebond, the king reinstated all of the duke's lands and titles, willing to forgive the fact that Duke Roger had been planning regicide for a very long time. The queen, still sickly, died of a magically induced sickness in March of 439 HE.

Due to her death, her husband committed suicide, leaving the realm to their son.

Personality and traits

Lianne was a loving mother to her son, and was worried for his welfare. She was soft and quiet, but not afraid to speak up when she felt that something was needed. Her sickly temperament made her seem reserved and guarded.

Family tree

Appearances

Lianne was a minor character in The Song of the Lioness quartet. She appeared both in Alanna: The First Adventure and in In the Hand of the Goddess. The circumstances of her death were related in Lioness Rampant.
