Queen Lianne of Conté, born Lianne of Naxen, was Queen of Tortall in the early 5th century of the Human Era. She is the namesake of two of her descendants: her granddaughter Lianne of Conté, and her great-granddaughter Lianokami.

Biography

Lianne of Naxen was born in 392 HE to one of the greatest ducal houses in Tortall, the Naxen family. Her older brother was Duke Gareth, the later training master of the pages and duke. Her parents, at least her father, predeceased her, as her brother was Duke of Naxen before her death. In 414 HE, at 19 years of age, she married Roald of Conté, becoming either a princess or Queen of Tortall (as it is unknown when exactly Roald succeeded his father, King Jasson.) Her only child was Prince Jonathan of Conté, who was born in 416 HE.

From the beginning of her marriage Lianne had fertility problems and even miscarriages. Her son's birth wasn't an easy one. Afterwards she was advised against having other children but tried nonetheless to fulfill her duty to her husband to produce another heir to ensure the royal line. Lianne got pregnant again and gave birth to a stillborn in 419 HE. After this she couldn't get pregnant anymore.[1]

Like her son, she fell prey to the Sweating Sickness sent by Duke Roger of Conté in March 431 HE.[2] She also suffered from other illnesses induced by Duke Roger's magic and died in March of 439 HE. After her death, her husband died in what was officially an accident though thought by many to be a suicide.

Personality

Lianne was a loving mother to her son, and was worried for his welfare. She was soft and quiet, but not afraid to speak up when she felt that something was needed. Her sickly temperament made her seem reserved and guarded.

Appearances

Lianne was a minor character in The Song of the Lioness quartet. She appeared both in Alanna: The First Adventure and in In the Hand of the Goddess. The circumstances of her death were related in Lioness Rampant.
