Jump is a dog who belongs to Keladry of Mindelan. He was raised at the Royal Palace around Daine the Wildmage, making him far more intelligent than animals who hadn't spent their lives around her.

Biographical Information[]

In Page[]

Jump and Kel cross paths in the autumn of 453 HE when he was barely more than a puppy. He had stolen some meat from the butchers and ran away with it. The butcher chased Jump in circles with a cleaver, never able to catch him. When Jump ran to Kel, she protected him. Since the pages aren't allowed pets, in Alanna the Lioness's time at the palace and since, Kel makes plans to clean him up, then take him to Daine.

After Gower begs Kel to hire Lalasa Isran and she acquiesces, he plays coy about the dog to show his gratitude. Before she was able to take Jump to Daine, the sparrows showed confusion about this new stranger, and Kel assured them that he wouldn't be staying. When the dog met Neal, Kel's friend, he made friends and sniffed in Neal's pockets, finding a roll that the page had taken from the mess hall there. After dinner, Kel took him to Daine, meeting the dragonet, Skysong, or Kitten, as she was called informally. The dragon called Daine and inspected Jump. After Kel explained things to Daine, she tried to get away, saying that the wildmage should keep him as the pages aren't allowed pets. Daine said she would try to keep him.

The dog kept leaving Daine for Kel, and Neal explained later that the wildmage would not try to force an animal to stay with her. Jump made friends with Wyldon of Cavall during the pages' camping trip, in order to follow the group. Owen of Jesslaw, a page who was a year below Kel and Neal, pointed out that Jump was smart and made it appear as if he were following Lord Wyldon, as opposed to one of the pages, in order to stay with the group.

Physical Description[]

A mostly white dog, Jump has black spots on his nose, rump, and lone ear. His slightly bowed legs support a barrel chest and narrow hips. His tail appears broken in at least two spots and his left ear is only tatters. His whole ear is sharply pointed and upright on a thick ax blade shaped head that looks too big for even his sturdy neck to support. His sharp, triangular black eyes are small but intelligent.[1]
