Jorality "Jory" Bancanor is one of Daja Kisubo's students, which she meets when she is with Frostpine in Kugisko, along with her twin sister Niamara; the twins are twelve years old at the time the novel takes place. Jory is an ambient cooking mage, and her main teacher is Olennika Potcracker, on whom Jory insisted to the point where she would accept no other teacher. Daja teaches both twins meditation, though separately; when Jory has difficulty concentrating during traditional, sitting meditation, Daja teaches her to meditate through staff fighting, a technique taught to her by Dedicate Skyfire.

Biography

Early life

Jory was born and raised in luxury, as a member of the extremely wealthy Bancanor family. Even so, she was raised to respect and look kindly upon those less fortunate than she is. She became close with Morrachane Ladradun, the mother of Bennat Ladradun when she was younger. Jory knew that Morrachane only treated herself and her twin with kindness.

Her parents had magic-sniffers come to the house in order to search for power in the twins. They didn't find anything, but that is because they were not academic mages.

Discovery of magic

In 1039 KF, Daja Kisubo and Frostpine came to stay at Bancanor House on Kadasep Island. The twins befriend Daja and try and teach her to skate, becoming close.

Jory was helping the family's cook Anyussa with a dish, when Daja saw her use magic in order to remove the lumps in the sauce. When asked about it, Jory claimed that magic-sniffers had already been by to inform Kol that his children did not have magic. Daja created a metal mirror in order to show the twins their magics. Jory had cooking magic, and Nia had carpentry magic. Matazi and Kol were resigned to their daughters having magic, knowing it would complicate things when it came to arranged marriages. Jory was ecstatic when Daja informed them that the girls had to choose their own teachers.

They went out in the sleigh once Matazi had put together a list, and started with Nia. She chose the first woodshop that she saw, Camoc Oakborn's. Jory claimed that Nia was mad to choose the first one, and Morrachane Ladradun expressed disapproval that the girls be allowed to choose their own teachers. Jory tricked Daja into taking her to Yorgiry's Hospital by pretending to humor her in visiting each teacher on the list, while really tiring the older girl out. Jory revealed that she wanted to study with Olennika Potcracker, the mage who cooked for the empress. Jory knew that Daja would be too tired to object, and Serg took them to Blackfly Bog.

Olennika said that she didn't usually take students, because of how noisy the kitchens were, but she decided to give Jory a chance. She tested Jory by telling her to bring out certain spices from her stores, which were not labeled. If Jory was serious, she would know the different spices. Jory passed, and Olennika took her on as her student. Daja was still stuck with teaching Jory meditation because of the noise level in the kitchens.

Daja noted that Potracker's firm manner will be good for Jory's wild spirit. Because teaching meditation to the twins at the same time is so tiring- Jory is so wild, while Nia is just the opposite - Daja split up their meditation time and taught Jory with the fighting style she learned from Dedicate Skyfire, and Nia with the more conventional way. Jory and her sister were on good terms with Daja when she and her teacher leave.

Personality and traits

Jory is very wild. The fighting-style meditation technique worked best for her, while the more traditional technique worked well for her sister. She was incredibly hyperactive. She also knew how to get her way. This is seen when she and Daja look around Kugisko for teachers. She intentionally just goes everywhere to wear Daja out, then springs the idea of studying with Olennika Potcracker on the smith-mage when she is too weary to object. Jory is very determined with all she does.

Physical description

Jory looks exactly like her sister, and takes after her mother. In Cold Fire she is 12 years old, 5'4" and slender. She has creamy brown skin and gold-brown crinkled hair that falls to her waist. Her eyes are large and brown, set over a slender nose. She takes after her mother from the south rather than the pale Namornese. She seems to be unaware of her growing beauty.

Other information

Tamora Pierce plans on writing another novel centered around Jory and her sister, which will also be situated in Namorn. However, it's still a while until she will get to writing this book.[1]

Appearances

Jorality Bancanor has only appeared in Cold Fire, the third book of The Circle Opens quartet. Her family was mentioned briefly in The Will of the Empress.
