Jessamine of Conté was the second wife of King Roger III, King of Tortall. She was the mother of Gareth of Conté, who would later become known as Gareth the Strong when he was King. She took a more active role in the politics and governance of Tortall, which prompted her husband to take more of an interest as well.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Jessamine was born a princess of Barzun,[1] the country to the south of Tortall that would later be conquered by King Jasson III in the late 300s HE. As countries forged marital alliances between their royalty, Princess Jessamine married King Roger in 245 HE after the death of his first wife, Queen Alysy. She was also much younger than her husband,[2] as he was in his early forties, and she was in her twenties.

Queen of Tortall[]

Jessamine became Queen of Tortall upon her marriage to King Roger. Unlike Queen Alysy, Jessamine took an active and stronger role in the politics of Tortall, which prompted her husband to take an interest as well, as he was smitten with her. This angered Roger's younger brother, Prince Baird, as well as many of King Roger's nobles and mages, who ruled in his name while he was younger and married to Queen Alysy.

This made Prince Baird and other nobles like Dewin of Queensgrace and Lady Aeldra to form a traitorous conspiracy. In 249 HE, the conspiracy kidnapped Prince Gareth with the intention of wresting power away from the King and putting Prince Baird on the throne. Jessamine met with Matthias Tunstall and Rebakah Cooper when the two Provost's Dogs came to examine the scene.

Queen Jessamine was immensely relieved once they rescued Prince Gareth.

Physical description[]

Jessamine was very beautiful, and had hair like dark clouds.

Personality and traits[]

From the beginning, she expected her husband to take an active responsibility with his country, and was the main driving force behind his interest and his abandonment of his vices.
