Haname noh Ajikuro (pronounced HAH-nah-may noe ah-jee-KOOR-oh) was a Yamani noblewoman and a member of the Ajikuro family, one of the most respected and powerful Yamani families in the Islands, one that was even older than the emperor's family.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Haname was presumably raised in the way most Yamani noblewomen were and was instructed in the fighting arts and naginata. She was instructed in other subjects, such as battle strategy, farming and agriculture, and history as a Yamani noblewoman.

Tortall and lady in waiting[]

Haname was selected by the emperor to be the lady in waiting of Princess Shinkokami, who had been chosen as the betrothed of Crown Prince Roald of Tortall. Because of her family's status, her presence was seen as one more way to honor the new alliance between the Islands and Tortall. Haname was one of the few high-born Yamani people who accompanied the princess, as Shinkokami did not wish to alienate the Tortallans by surrounding herself with her people. Lady Yukimi was also selected to be one of the princess's ladies in waiting, and was indeed the only other Yamani noblewoman to accompany the princess to Tortall. They were also joined by Eitaro noh Nakuji, a second-rank prince and close relative of the emperor, who advised Shinkokami to not show her more battle ready side, and to act more conventional.

Because of their beauty, Lady Haname and Lady Yukimi were very popular among the high-born men of Tortall. Haname was quieter and less flirtatious than Yuki and enjoyed talking of politics, history, and agriculture more than flirting.

Physical description[]

Lady Haname is described as very beautiful and has many Tortallan male admirers. She has a "pointed chin and serene eyes". She is very adept at the naginata, like the other Yamani ladies including Princess Shinkokami.
