Graystreak was the chief of a herd of centaurs, which lived near the small village of Haresfield. He had cast several annoying bucks out of the herd, and a few misguided females followed them. As females attack male centaurs who can't give them gifts, the males banded together with a group of humans to rob and raze Haresfield, the centaurs' main trading partner.

The Bandit Attack on Haresfield[]

Graystreak met with Raoul of Goldenlake when the King's Own were called to investigate the matter. He was talking to Lord Raoul when he noticed Keladry of Mindelan, Raoul's squire. He broke off his conversation, went over to her, and circled her in an appraising manner. He said that she was a strong two-legger female, and that she would breed easily and bear sons of Graystreak's kind. Kel imagined him being put to dray horse work in northern mines. The sparrows, sensing that Graystreak had said something not at all sporting, attacked him. Jump advanced but was stopped by Lord Raoul before he attacked. Graystreak offered Lord Raoul three slaves—full-blood horses—for Kel, and two more if she bred successfully within a year. Lord Raoul said that human females were not for sale, and that she was in training to be a knight.

Graystreak said a few things about how sorry he was that this happened to Haresfield, and that he would find a different trading partner while the village regained its footing. It was clear that he was lying through his teeth and that he did have an inkling of what would happen after he cast out a few male centaurs. As Graystreak started to leave, Peachblossom and Drum, the latter being Raoul's horse, blocked his path. As they were both geldings, Kel was shocked, as no gelding ever defies a stallion. Graystreak called them unnatural, and Raoul cited Daine the Wildmage as being the reason for the animals' intelligence. Raoul then said that Graystreak must have forgotten that he was obligated by treaty to provide a third of his herd for to help capture the bandits. Graystreak was angry, but hid it under a mask of politeness, and said that he was trying to figure out which centaurs to send and that he was preoccupied—another lie.

Graystreak ended up sending three females and two males to help catch the bandits, per his treaty with Haresfield. They, unlike their chief, were eager for the hunt. One of them was a centaur female named Iriseyes.

Kel called him a "sidestepping sack of ooze".
