Gilab Lofts (pronounced gee-LAHB, hard "g"), nicknamed Gil, was a former hill bandit who was caught and put to hard labor. In 460 HE, he served on the guard in Haven. He was killed in battle at Fief Rathhausak during a rescue mission.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Before being caught by the Crown, Gil was a hill bandit who rode with Breakbone Dell, whom Gil proclaimed to be the "meanest dog-skinner you'd ever hope to meet". He, along with Breakbone Dell and a bunch of other hill bandits, chased a group of pages who stumbled into their camp up to a cliff. He was impressed by the page who killed Breakbone Dell, Keladry of Mindelan.

Haven[]

At the commander's first dinner at the camp, she addressed her new people. Gil approached her, ignoring Elbridge. When she asked how she could help him, Gil asked if she saw any fighting near the River Hasteren seven years hence, with hillmen. When Kel replied that she had and that she and a few other pages were foolish enough to stumble into a bandit camp, Gil was jubilant. He described her fighting skill and said that she was as "cool as meltwater", even with Breakbone Dell riding down on her, and that she gutted him. Once Gil finished his tale, he bowed to her, showing his deep respect. The entire story had made Kel speechless.

He helped defend Haven on a number of counts against Scanran raiders and killing devices.

Enemy territory[]

He, along with many convicts, went with Kel and company to find and rescue the Haven refugees. After finding the adults, Gil continued on with Kel and the more experienced fighters to rescue the children from Blayce the Gallan and Stenmun. During the attack on Fief Rathhausak, he was killed. Nealan of Queenscove, a knight and a healer, was unable to save him.

Physical Description[]

He was thin from being underfed, as the previous commanders did not want to waste food on the convicts. He had coarsely cut black hair that was graying slightly. The stubble on his chin also showed signs of age. His skin showed that he was perhaps descended from the Bazhir of the Great Southern Desert, but was too pale to be full-blooded. His eyes had a gray coloring.

Personality & Traits[]

Gil was very loyal to Kel and the people of Haven, regardless of his convict status and past. He was willing to follow Kel and help her and even instigated it.

Appearances[]

Possible connections[]

Gil could be descended from the Lofts, a crime family that achieved prominence during the 200s HE, during Beka's early years as a Puppy. Due to Tamora Pierce's penchant for connecting characters from the 200s and the 400s, the connection could be quite possible.
