Sir Garvey of Runnerspring (pronounced GAHR-vee) was a third year page[1] when Keladry of Mindelan, the first girl page to train after the Lioness started her training in 452 HE[2].

Biography[]

Training for knighthood[]

Page[]

He began his training in 450 HE, the same year as Joren of Stone Mountain, Vinson of Genlith, and Zahir ibn Alhaz. He at first was not a member of Joren's inner circle until the arrival of Keladry of Mindelan in 452, and after Zahir at denounced Joren's actions as childish. He was one of the pages who was staunchly against having a girl train to be a knight, and joined Joren and Vinson in a quest to get her to quit. Unlike Zahir, Garvey remained a member of Joren's posse throughout page training and some of squiredom. Kel fought them quite a bit, in order to get rid of the bullying that the hazing custom brought along. He was also incredibly un-remorseful about his actions throughout the entirety of getting rid of Kel.

Squire[]

Garvey was taken as a squire by Sir Jerel of Nenan. He did not participate in Joren's plan to make Kel miss the big examinations, but agreed with Vinson of Genlith when he shouted that she must have hired the men to skip out of the exams because she was too nervous.

Sir Jerel was mostly stationed in the southwestern part of Tortall, in order to combat freeholders and slave traders. Kel wondered whether or not he grew up in that time, as he would have seen a fair bit of combat. He jousted with Kel a bit after she had been taken on by Lord Raoul of Goldenlake, and claimed that court was going to the girls. Kel's explanation for this behavior was that he was "just being Garvey"[3].

Knighthood[]

He passed his Ordeal of Knighthood in the Midwinter of 457 and 458 HE, unlike Joren and Vinson[4].

Personality and traits[]

Throughout the books, Garvey is portrayed as being a very unpleasant boy. While Joren is cunning and acts out on his hate in unimaginable ways, Garvey is content to simply hate Kel and make snide remarks about her honor and her skills.
