First Daughter[1] jian Cadao is a priestess of the Great Mother Goddess of the 5th century HE. She is the First Daughter, and thus the leader, of the Mother of Waters convent in Rachia, a large city in Sarain. She is a paternal cousin of Thayet of Conté, although the degree of kinship is unknown. It was enough for the First Daughter to disobey direct orders to report Thayet's arrival at the Mother of Waters convent to Dusan zhir Anduo[2].

At first the First Daughter feared repercussion of even letting Thayet and her friends in to sanctuary, regardless of whether they also had hungry refugee children. Alanna of Trebond had to pull rank and threaten to report them to the Goddess-on-Earth in the City of the Gods for refusing sanctuary to people in need[3]. It was explained later that she feared possible danger to the people to whom she was already offering sanctuary if Thayet remained with them, although she was sure that no priestess would betray the princess.
