Before the series
Ferdy's family was incredibly wealthy and owned half an island in the Copper Isles because of the sunset butterfly trade, a high commodity for mages. He believed in, at least until 463 HE, the ideas of luarin supremacy and autonomy. Before the Balitang family was exiled to Lombyn Island and their humble estates called Tanair, he and Saraiyu Balitang engaged in quite a few flirtations. His mother, Countess Tomang, did not approve, and did everything but send her son to gather butterflies in order to separate Ferdy and Sarai.
After the Balitang family was exiled by King Oron, Ferdy and his mother stayed at the Rittevon court. The news of the family's exile must have been relatively good news to Countess Tomang, who did not want her son to "dirty himself" by marrying or even flirting with a woman who was mixed race.
The Return of the Exiles
The Rittevon court was under new leadership after the deaths of King Oron and King Hazarin. The throne passed to King Dunevon, a five year old boy. He ruled under a regency council headed by his half-sister, Princess Imajane, and his brother in law, Prince Rubinyan. The prince and princess regent invited the Balitang family back from exile after Mequen Balitang was killed during a fight with Bronau Jimajen, who was also killed during the fighting. The princess decreed that the Balitang family must present themselves to the court almost immediately after their arrival in Rajmuat. This was meant to make them humiliated with their country fashions, but the princess was outwitted by Lady Nuritin.
Ferdy found Sarai as attractive as ever, and flirted with her relentlessly. His mother greatly disapproved at first, but Nuritin Balitang convinced her to let it go, as Sarai was Duke Elsren's half-sister, and Elsren was King Dunevon's heir presumptive. He continued flirting with Sarai, and seemed to expect something in return. When the news got out that Sarai had ran off with the Carthaki healer, Zaimid Hetnim, his mother was incensed. This was futile, as even if Sarai had stayed, she would have been pressured into marrying her second cousin, King Dunevon, as the prince and princess regent had offered Sarai Dunevon's hand in marriage in order to control the young girl. Neither Ferdy nor his mother knew of this information, however, so they were still greatly injured.
His mother was a member of the luarin conspiracy, a group that was against the Rittevon family in that they only wished to change the policies rather than change the rulers. The Tomang family became a part of the conspiracy after being heavily taxed by the Rittevon rulers. The arrest of Vurquan Nomru also caused unrest amongst the luarin nobility, who believed that if Duke Nomru could be arrested and put into Kanodang, then no one of their rank was safe. Aly Homewood noted that the group was more of a "complaint society" rather than a conspiracy.
In 463 HE, he fought on the side of the raka rebellion and lost an eye. His mother died in the fighting.
Ferdy was luarin, which means he was white. He was also described as being very handsome, and due to his wealth, he dressed in rich fabrics to show his prestige. After the battle that put Dovasary Balitang on the throne, Ferdy has only one eye.
Personality and traits
Even though he was courting a half-raka woman, he was not very sensitive to the plight of the raka and the injustices that they faced under cruel luarin rule. He also showed his dislike and disdain for them by referring to them as "raka dogs" and that they should go "back to their kennels". This did not win him points with Sarai, who loved the raka and wished that she could help better their lives.
Ferdolin Tomang only appears in Trickster's Queen.
