Princess Fazia Iliniat, born Fazia Tasikhe, was the sister of the Carthaki Emperor Ozorne and the mother of Kaddar Iliniat, who succeeded Ozorne to the throne. She had been married to a prince of the Chelogu province in Zallara, Kaddar's father. Fazia's husband died in 446 HE.[1]

Biography

Later life

It was Fazia who had bought her son his magicked jewelry that protected him from being poisoned or attacked by lesser magicians. The bracelet she gave her son was so expensive that Kaddar suspected she had sold family heirlooms to pay for it, even though he never asked her about the exact price. She had bought the bracelet of a Shusini mage, who had also made it.[2]

Fazia had a grandson from her son Kaddar and his wife Kalasin of Conté, Binur Iliniat. She didn't get on with her daughter-in-law very well as Kalasin had too many progressive opinions and didn't behave as a Carthaki Empress should. The only thing they agreed about was Binur, whom both openly adored.[3]

Inheritance

Fazia's case highlights the semi-agnatic primogeniture that is used for the Carthaki throne. She was the closest living relative of Emperor Ozorne — and would have inherited in standard male-preference primogeniture — but the throne passed through her to her son Kaddar, as there were no other male-line males to inherit. Semi-agnatic primogeniture allows for female-line males to inherit (as long as there are no other eligible male-line males), but not male-line females. Historically, in real life, this type of practice is known as Salic law.

Appearances

She is only mentioned in Emperor Mage, where after the battle the Tortallans stayed to rest at first at her house. She told them that they couldn't stay any longer after she heard what Daine had done to the emperor's palace.

She has been mentioned online by Tamora Pierce, and she will likely make an appearance in one of the upcoming installments of the Numair Chronicles trilogy.
