Eda Bell (pronounced AE-dah) is the Shang Wildcat, currently in resident at the palace. She trains the pages in hand-to-hand combat with the help of Hakuin Seastone, the Shang Horse. She is a formidable warrior who teaches Keladry of Mindelan extra exercises to help her strengthen the muscles in her arms and thus to keep up with the boys.

History[]

Early life[]

Before she joined the Shang, Eda Bell lived in the hill country south of Malven, where she was also born.[1]

At some point, perhaps very early in her childhood, she was taken to become a Shang warrior. As the school is located in Maren, she likely spent most of her early life there, studying Shang. She became the Wildcat once she passed all examinations and trials. As a Shang master, she most likely traveled a lot, but she also taught at the school, perhaps after gaining more experience through travel. She taught Liam Ironarm, the future Shang Dragon, kick-boxing. He respected her greatly, and entrusted her in bringing his final words, in the form of a letter, to Alanna the Lioness, who was mourning for him.

Training instructor[]

At some point between the arrival of Keladry of Mindelan as a page, Eda Bell became an instructor for the pages in hand to hand combat, along with Hakuin Seastone. She was one of Kel's primary fighting instructors, and helped her multiple times in the girl's quest for exercises to keep up. She also accompanied the pages to their summer camps during Kel's time as a page. As the only other female, the Wildcat stands in as Kel's "chaperone" and camps with her.

At the Midwinter banquets of 453 HE Eda Bell shared a table with Hakuin Seastone, the archpriestess of the Great Mother Goddess and Harailt of Aili. Starting with the third night of the festivities Kel waited on their table, even though she was only a second-year page and not senior enough to wait on them.[2]

Physical description[]

Eda Bell is described as having a grandmotherly appearance with tight gray curls. Tamora Pierce based her on her stepmother.[3]

Appearances[]

She appears in Lioness Rampant, First Test and Page.
