Dunlath is a fief of Tortall near the Scanran border and is in many ways the last line of Tortallan defense in its area.
Dunlath Castle is located on a small island in the middle of Long Lake. Around the lake is a mountain range, in which black opals were mined. Most of the mines were empty by 450 HE.[1]
Dunlath is a day's journey on horseback from the City of the Gods, which lies to the northwest through the Northern Pass.
Under law, in Yolane's time, they are only permitted forty men at arms to guard the fief .[2]
Conspiracy against Tortall[]
In 450 HE,[3] Numair Salmalín and Daine Sarrasri discovered that Yolane of Dunlath and her husband Belden were conspiring with Carthaki Emperor Ozorne against Tortall.
Yolane's half-sister Maura of Dunlath helped to thwart the conspiracy. Yolane tried to flee, but was arrested and convicted of high treason. Belden committed suicide rather than be captured.[1] Maura inherited the fief. Douglass of Veldine was appointed as her knight-protector.
