Baron Sir Cleon of Kennan[1], born in 440 HE, was a page and squire at the same time as Kel, although he is two years older. He develops a strong attachment to her, which results in love. He was squired to Inness of Mindelan, one of Kel's older knight brothers. However, his fief is impoverished by floods and he is engaged to marry a neighboring heiress.
Biography
Early life
Cleon was born in 440 HE. Not much of his family is known except that he has a sister who will later join the Queen's Riders[2] and that his father dies before Cleon comes off age with Cleon being the heir to fief Kennan. His mother manages it for Cleon while he trains for his shield.
Page years
He enters page training in 450 HE. Two years later Keladry of Mindelan becomes a page, although still on probation. As is the custom for first year pages Cleon makes her run little errands, like fetching his bow and quiver for archery practice or his gloves. Cleon doesn't mean any harm with it, however, and later he also joins the study group in Nealan of Queenscove's room and goes with the others when they patrol the corridors to make sure that Joren of Stone Mountain and his friends don't harass any other first years. By the end of his four years as a page Cleon is a good friend of Kel, Neal and even of the Crown Prince Roald II of Conté.
Squire years
In 454 HE Cleon passes his big examinations becoming a squire. Inness of Mindelan takes him as a squire and Cleon spends much time at Mindelan, becoming acquainted with Kel's family. Kel's nieces and nephews seem to be specially attached to him. He is still a squire when his friendship to Kel develops further and they become lovers, although they don't progress farther than kissing each other. Cleon, however, plans on marrying Kel in spite of his betrothal to the heiress of a neighbouring fief and wants to talk his mother around.
Knighthood
Cleon passes his Ordeal of Knighthood in 458 HE and becomes a Knight of Tortall. By then he is also officially the lord of Kennan, making him Baron Sir Cleon of Kennan. As Scanra is already a thread to the north Cleon is sent to the northern border of Tortall. He even spends winters there training the locals on protecting themselves. By 460 HE Cleon has to accept the betrothal with Ermelian of Aminar[3] because the storage rooms of Kennan have been destroyed by a flood and this is the only way to get the necessary funds to get his people through the winter. Thus his relationship to Kel ends and he travels south.
Physical description
He is described as being quite big and having curly red hair and grey eyes[4].
