Chitral (pronounced chit-TRAHL) is an elemental being of the Tortallan Universe.

The Dominion Jewel

Chitral created the Dominion Jewel, a powerful artifact with strong ties to the Earth's magic. Those who are natural rulers can harness its power[1]. The Jewel finds its way back to Chitral after spending time with humans, and does this naturally. Chitral likes it because it keeps him company.

When Alanna of Trebond came to claim the Jewel, Chitral sent powerful storms to hinder her. When she called for him to send something she could beat, he took the form of a stone ape and fought with her using swords. He admired Lightning, her sword, as it held ancient magic. Chitral only gave her the Jewel when she decided it wasn't worth hurting him—even though he likely would have beaten her in the end.

Powers and age

"I am this place, and these mountains. I suppose you might call me an elemental."
—Chitral in Lioness Rampant[2]

He lives on the Roof of the World and encompasses Chitral pass and surrounding areas. He is immensely powerful and ancient, older than the gods themselves. As an elemental, he has access to powerful earth magic, and can harness the snows and winds around the Roof of the World.

Appearances

He only appears once in Lioness Rampant.

Notes and references

  1. It is unknown if the ruler must have the Gift to use the Jewel. Since the Jewel requires the same level of concentration required for accomplishing large magics, it is likely that magical training helps.
  2. Lioness Rampant, Chapter 4 (pg. 163; Simon Pulse paperback)

Fun fact

Chitral is one of the few elementals that appear in the Tortallan Universe, but his power mirrors the elementals of the Circle Universe featured in Melting Stones and Battle Magic, like Luvo, Starns, and the Magma Spirits.
