Sir Cathal of Queenscove was the second son of Duke Baird and Duchess Wilina of Queenscove. He was the younger brother of the heir to the fief, Sir Graeme of Queenscove, and the older brother of Sir Nealan of Queenscove and Jessamine of Disart. Cathal and Graeme were both killed during the Immortals War in the winter between 451 and 452 HE, and when they died, Neal suddenly found himself the heir to the dukedom.[1]

On February 4th, 452 HE, Neal formally withdrew from the Tortallan Royal University to a pursue a knighthood in their stead. According to Neal, Queenscove knights had always served the Crown as knights, including twelve on the Great Roll of Knights, and he felt it was his responsibility to serve after the loss of his brothers. Cathal and Graeme thought knighthood was the greatest service they could give.[2]
