Lady Buriram of Goldenlake and Malorie's Peak[1], born Buriram Tourakom (pronounced BOOR-ih-rahm TOOR-a-komm) of the K'miri Hau Ma clan, known as Buri, was Thayet's personal guard and familial servant of Kalasin and Thayet. She aided in Thayet's escape from Sarain with Alanna. She was born around 425 HE[1][2]

Founder and second-in-command/co-commander of the Queen's Riders since its creation, Buri handles the day-to-day operations under Thayet. She was promoted to full Commander during the Immortals War when Thayet's duties as queen kept her too busy. Also group commander of the Seventeenth Rider Group.

As of September 460 HE, Buri had resigned as commander of Riders, passing command to Evin Larse and become betrothed to Raoul.[3] After this she often accompanies the King's Own, although she sometimes also rides with the Queen and her ladies. In summer she still helps training the new Riders.

Biography

Buri was born around 425 HE into one of the K’mir tribes north of Sarain. Like many K’miri, she was raised to be a warrior . Her family was dedicated to the service and protection of Princess Thayet’s family. Buri’s family served Thayet’s for generations, including following Thayet’s mother, Princess Kalasin of the K’mir when she married Adigun jin Wilima, warlord of Sarain.

When civil war broke out in Sarain during 437 HE, Thayet had to flee her father’s enemies. Buri kept her family’s duty and followed Thayet to protect her.

Buri, along with Thayet and a group of refugee children, met Alanna, Coram, and Liam on the road in Sarain. Buri’s group was on their way to the Mother of Waters convent in Rachia, Sarain for shelter. Buri and Thayet managed to capture and disarm Alanna and her friends before deciding they were friendly. Alanna agreed to help the children reach their destination, though Buri was initially hesitant to agree to an alliance. She tried to explain that she must follow in the footsteps of her family: her mother and brother died for Kalasin. Buri felt she must do everything in her power to protect Thayet from any danger.

Upon reaching Rachia, Thayet was attacked by assassins. The group arrived at the convent but it was made clear that they were unwelcome: Thayet was a target for her father’s enemies. The convent could not safely shelter Thayet from the rebels. Buri, being K’mir, would also have been unsafe. Thayet and Buri agreed to travel with Alanna to the Roof of the World, leaving the refugee children and Sarain behind.

Physical description

Buri has golden brown skin and straight black hair. She is about 5"4 ,with a short nose, firm mouth, level black eyes and is left-handed. She was stocky and muscular. Her hair, braided tightly back from her face, framed high cheekbones and a square chin.

Skills and abilities

She is a ferocious fighter armed and unarmed.

While Buri was on the run with Thayet during the Saren civil war, she showed herself to be a competent warrior, hunter, traveler, and even babysitter.

In particular, Buri showed skill with a bow. She rose easily, but did not show the expertise of other K’mir (i.e. Onua). She never complained about travelling on the road. She showed Alanna how to take care of the orphan refugee baby.

Relationships

Family

Buri has only mentioned two blood relatives: her mother and her brother, Pathom. Both served Kalasin personally. They died keeping guards away from Kalasin so she could commit suicide.

Raoul of Goldenlake

She becomes romantically involved with Raoul, albeit very secretively and shyly, after Keladry does a bit of matchmaking. They originally tried to keep it a very unsubtle secret but everyone has known for a while that they have seen each other as more than just comrades and they are the last ones to know about it themselves. They eventually become engaged and as of September 460 HE Buri and Raoul are married. She may still get children, but as she is already in her thirties upon her marriage and wants a more settled life before, this isn't certain.[1]

Keladry of Mindelan

Buri acts as an adviser and friend to Kel. She is very kind and supportive to the girl, as she knows what its like to be in her place. After Vinson of Genlith is convicted of sexual assault, Buri talks of it with Kel—as the girl knows she should have reported Vinson years ago to keep this from happening. Buri tells her that she should have reported it, but also that Kel has learned from her mistake, and will report in the future.
