"That sounds like the old stiff-rump. If arrogance were shoes, he'd never go barefoot."
Raoul of Goldenlake referring to Burchard of Stone Mountain before the trial against Joren of Stone Mountain[src]

Burchard of Stone Mountain (pronounced BURR-chahrd) is a Tortallan nobleman and a member of the Stone Mountain clan. He was the father of the late Joren of Stone Mountain and a staunch supporter of the conservative factions of the nobility.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Like all heirs to fiefdoms, Burchard would have gone through knight training. He learned how to be extremely bigoted from his family and perhaps while in training. At some point, he married, and had children, the eldest of which was Joren.

Kidnap scandal and his son's death[]

When news of his son's kidnapping of Lalasa Isran reached the high courts of Corus, Burchard refused to make it look like it meant anything, as Lalasa was "only a maid". He did send the advocate of the Stone Mountain family, Ebroin of Genlith, to deal with the problem.

Later on, in 458 HE, the door to the Chamber of the Ordeal opened on to his son's corpse. Burchard blamed Keladry of Mindelan, believing her to have bewitched the Chamber to make it biased toward his son, as Burchard had recognized that being around Kel had changed Joren's personality. Burchard entered Lord Raoul's tents by force, shouting threats and derogatory slurs at Kel. Raoul said he made allowances for Lord Burchard's grief, and that he wouldn't challenge him to the sword.

Appearances[]

The only time Burchard appears is in Squire. He is first mentioned there by Raoul of Goldenlake and Malorie's Peak, the Knight Commander of the King's Own, in chapter eight. Later in this novel he appears personally after his son is found dead in the Chamber of the Ordeal and blames Keladry of Mindelan for this.
