Baird of Conté was a prince of Tortall in the 3rd century HE and a member of House Conté, the royal family. He was the younger brother of King Roger II[1]. He had several daughters, the oldest of whom was married to Lionel of Trebond[2]. Before the birth of Prince Gareth, Prince Baird was his brother's heir presumptive.
Biography
As heir presumptive
Although Gershom of Haryse said that Prince Baird was only interested in vices, it seemed that in reality Baird was more interested in quietly ruling the country through his brother while maintaining an outward and public disposition toward vices. He was very happy that he was his brother's heir and he used his noble contacts in order to rule the country while his brother was off doing his own things. Prince Baird oversaw the Privy Council and Council of Nobles, and heavily overtaxed the merchants and poorer classes[3].
This changed when King Roger married Princess Jessamine of Barzun, a beautiful woman who was also interested in politics. She sparked her new husband's interest in ruling the country and was the main reason for why King Roger became so involved in politics, much to Prince Baird's chagrin. To add insult to injury, Jessamine gave birth to a son, Prince Gareth, officially displacing Prince Baird as King Roger's heir. He had to feign a cheerful outlook on his nephew's birth, and gave him a gold rattle that was later destroyed in a fire after Prince Gareth was kidnapped[4].
Treason
In 249 HE Prince Baird was part of a conspiracy to overthrow the Crown. He worked in concert with Dewin of Queensgrace, a count; his wife Lady Aeldra; the Baron of Aspen Vale; and his two sons, Graeme and Elyot of Aspen Vale. They had people kidnap Prince Gareth in order to sell him into slavery. For a while, the prince was kept right under Beka Cooper's nose. They also managed to recruit Matthias Tunstall.
The plans were stopped by Sabine of Macayhill and Beka Cooper and Prince Baird was beheaded for his treason in 249 HE.
Personality and traits
Gershom of Haryse once commented that the only things the prince was interested in were hunting-horses, hounds and falconry.[2]
This was later shown to be false, as it was all just a façade.
Appearances
The prince was mentioned twice in Bloodhound by Lord Gershom and appeared in Mastiff.
