Aymery Glassfire, born Aymery Chandler (pronounced EH-merr-ee CHAND-luhr), was a cousin of Trisana Chandler. He was a mage working for the pirate fleet attacking Winding Circle in 1035 KF and was killed by his allies.

Biography

Aymery Chandler was born around the second half of 1013 KF. He has two brothers and two sisters[1]. In his early teens Aymery spent two years with his cousin Uraelle[2]. When Aymery was young a magic tester discovered his academic magic and advised the family to send him to Lightsbridge.[3] Thus he left Capchen for Karang to study magic at the University of Lightsbridge.[4] He was the pride of his family, who hoped that he would bring money to them through his work as a mage.[1] He normally visited his family for the winter holidays and sometimes also in the summer. However these visits stopped around 1033 KF.[3] Upon receiving his mage's credentials he took the mage name Glassfire. He continued his studies even after being made a mage to pursue a master's credentials.[3] He gained a large debt by gambling and other things--pressumably women-- and Enahar gave him a loan to pay them off. Enahar, who's sister commanded a pirate fleet which would attack Winding Circle Temple in Summersea, Emelan, demanded that Aymery do his work in the temple community to pay him off.[5] To ensure Aymery's loyalty Enahar bound him to himself by spelling an earring and sealing it with both their blood. Through this magical bond Enahar can kill Aymery whenever he thinks he has betrayed him.[6]

He came to Winding Circle pretending to use its library for his studies[3] but in truth he spied for the pirate fleet and caused damage in the temple community by destroying the crystals, mirrors and water bowls used for scrying and thus making them unable to see the pirate fleet coming[7]. This also brought him to Discipline cottage, where he met his cousin Tris, as he delivered a letter from Adelghani Smokewind to Niklaren Goldeye.[8] When the temple dormitories got crowded because nearby villages were evacuated to save the inhabitants from the pirate attack, Aymery asked and was allowed to sleep in Sandry's room at Discipline cottage. Although Briar Moss liked the man he also mistrusted him, searching Aymery's belongings one evening and discovering that there was something wrong with Tris' cousin as he realized that Aymery had brought too few clothes for a stay of some weeks but that his belongings were too expensive to belong to a poor student.[9] Aymery was also responsible for putting sleep potion into the food made at the Hub and passed on to the whole temple community.[10]

After he betrayed the Winding Circle Temple he was killed by the pirates he worked for. He had tried to open the north gate for his allies when Tris caught up with him and delayed him. The pirates got impatient and blasted the gate open with black powder. Afterwards the attack leader stabbed Aymery with the words "the deal's off".[11]

Tris remembers him as the one family member who was kind to her. Even in his betrayal of the temple he tried to save her from the attack by making up a story about her father so she would go back to Capchen and escape the carnage. When she refused and then realized his true intentions he still promised to protect her.[5]

Physical description

Aymery is described as a handsome young man with brown hair and eyes. He has a long and arched nose; his mouth and chin are determined. He has a good sense in fashion and knows how to dress.[12] He wears an earring, which carries magic.[3] This earring also connects him to Enahar.

Skills and abilities

Aymery possesses academic magic and studied at the University of Lightsbridge. He has specialized on illusion-magic, but couldn't even use his own spells to protect his belongings but put bought ones on them[13]. Aymery is also known to have used invisibility spells.

Although he studied at Lightsbridge his powers as a mage seem to be much smaller than those of Niko, Lark or Rosethorn, who blaze like suns in Tris' magical vision, while Aymery just looks like a pale moonglow[3].
