"Crookshank is more than cracked. He's smashed all to pieces."
Goodwin refering to Crookshank after he raided the Court of the Rogue[src]

Ammon Lofts, known under the name of "Crookshank", is the second most powerful man in the Lower City[1] of Corus until mid-May of 246 HE. He owns about forty houses in the Lower City, twenty of which are situated in the Cesspool[2]. Thousands of families live in the houses he owns and have him as a landlord[3]. Crookshank got rich with the misery of the poor and by illegal doings. He dies on May 11 of 246 HE, when a rioting mob set fire to his house and Crookshank was trapped in it.[4]

The house he lives in is situated on the rear of the Nightmarket on Stuvek Street in the Lower City of Corus[5]. It is the biggest house on Stuvek Street and has glass windows[6], which is luxury in that area and time.

Personal history

Much isn't known about Crookshank's early life. By 246 HE he is a rich landlord in the Lower City of Corus and has a reputation of being mean and greedy.

In 246 HE Crookshank finds out that fire opals can be found in the foundations of the Lower City. He hires diggers to mine for the stones. When their work is done the diggers are killed. The Shadow Snake finds out about the stones, he kidnaps Crookshank's great-grandson and demands fire opals as ransom. Crookshank doesn't abide by this and thus causes Rolond's death. He accuses Kayfer Deerborn of being the Shadow Snake, although this isn't true. Crookshank even insults the Rogue in his own court. Deerborn takes revenge for this, setting fire to Crookshank's home the next night.

When Crooshank still doesn't pay up to the Shadow Snake his grandson Herun is taken. Crookshank, still blaming the Rogue, hires forty-odd off duty soldiers, members of the Palace Guard and other fighters, for two gold nobles each[7]. He also buys the services of the Provost's Guard's Evening Watch mage at Jane Street kennel, Fulk, with a fire opal. He then raids the Court of the Rogue in search for his grandson.[8]

Family

Ammon Lofts is married although his wife never appears in the books, nor is she mentioned by name[9]. He has a daughter-in-law called Annis Lofts. His grandson by Annis is Herun Lofts, who is married to Tansy Lofts. They have two children, Rolond Lofts, who is killed by the Shadow Snake in March of 246 HE, and Joy Lofts, whose birth Crookshank doesn't live to see.

Physical description

Crookshank has black hair[10] and brown eyes[11].

Appearances

Ammon Lofts only appears in Terrier. As he dies in the course of the novel he will most certainly not appear in any future books.
