- Lord Alan: "That is my decision. We need not discuss it."
- Thom: "He doesn't want us around. He doesn't care what we want."
- Alanna: "We know that. He doesn't care about anything, except his books and scrolls."

Lord Sir Alan of Trebond was the biological father of the twins Alanna and Thom of Trebond. He was married to Marinie of Trebond, former Marinie of Tasride,[1] who died in childbirth with the twins.
Biography[]
Early life[]
In his youth he had spent several years at the royal palace training as a knight around the same time that Duke Gareth went through his training years. Even then he was already "always in his books" and thus didn't do well at his training.[2]
Scholarly work[]
He was described as very scholarly, and after the death of his wife he cared more for his scrolls than his children. After their birth Lord Alan didn't let the Crown know of his children's birth.[3] Lord Alan wasn't really interested in his children and he was so immersed in his scrolls and books that he didn't even realize that Thom had forged his letters of introduction and the twins had changed places. Although Duke Gareth had sent him regular reports on "Alan"'s progress, Lord Alan never found out the truth. However, Alanna and Thom also profited from their father's strictness regarding book learning because he also made sure that his children were taught how to read, write and do basic mathematics. According to Gary many noblemen's sons lack those abilities when they first arrive at the royal palace to begin their training as a page.[4]
Ever since the death of his wife he had had a dislike of the Gift and thus he wouldn't allow his children to be trained in its usage. This seemed to be due to the fact that he believed that the healers' Gifts should have saved Marinie's life.[5] He seemed to dislike Gareth of Naxen from when they were younger. Lady Catherine, the twin's godmother, had once tried to get Lord Alan as her new husband, but the twins had made her leave through making her see things.[6] Lord Alan also disliked the royal palace and thus he never stayed or even visited there when his children were younger.[7]
He died in late winter or early spring of 434 HE calling out for his lost wife. Alanna's son, Alan of Pirate's Swoop (Aly's twin) was later named after him.
Appearances[]
He only appears as a minor character in Alanna: The First Adventure and is only mentioned in the later novels of The Song of the Lioness quartet. In the first volume of the series he is seen in the beginning, when he is stubborn about sending the twins away. In the second novel, In the Hand of the Goddess, his funeral is mentioned.
