Alan Cooper of Pirate's Swoop was born in 445 HE as the younger son of Alanna the Lioness and George of Pirate's Swoop. He is the twin brother of Alianne of Pirate's Swoop, and younger brother of Thom of Pirate's Swoop. He also has a much younger sister.
He became a Knight of Tortall in 466 HE or later.
Biography
On April 2, 455 HE, Alan wrote to Lord Imrah of Legann asking to train as a page under him. Pages almost always trained at the palace, but Alan explained that he did not want to learn chivalry from the palace training master Wyldon of Cavall, who was said to hate Alan's mother Alanna the Lioness. Imrah agreed to take him on, and Alan's parents both supported his decision.[2]
For unknown reasons, Alan did not begin his page training until 458 HE, at the age of thirteen.[3]
In 461 HE, his sister Aly went missing. Their father George found her several months later, alive and well in the Copper Isles, but could not convince her to come home.
Alan passed the "big examinations" to graduate from page training in 462 HE. He became the squire of Raoul of Goldenlake and Malorie's Peak, one of his mother's oldest friends and the previous knight-master of Keladry of Mindelan.[4]
In 463 HE, Alan was sent to the Copper Isles to fetch the Tortallan delegation back. He was able to see his sister for the first time in at least two years.
He later passed his Ordeal of Knighthood, probably in 466 HE.
Physical description
Alan's hair was the same colour as his twin sister Aly's: blond with a touch of red.[5]
Personality and traits
At ten years old, Alan described himself as "very tidy" and promised to be obedient and hard-working. According to his father George, Alan is shy and uncertain of himself. He is not unintelligent, but doesn't see himself as especially clever or talented. Lord Imrah described him as "lively" and was happy to bring him to Port Legann.[2]
Relationships
Alan is especially close to his sister Aly and always knows when she is frightened or in danger. When the twins were eight, their older brother Thom described them as "twin pains."[6]
As a child, Alan felt overshadowed by both of his siblings. He believed himself to be less clever than them, and was reluctant to put himself in situations where his talents might be compared with theirs.[2]
His mother Alanna was a little hurt that Alan did not ask her to be his knight-master, but realized that she would probably be too harsh on him and that he might not want to "put up with his grumpy old mother."[2]
