Academic magic is a form of magic only known in the Emelan Universe, the most fitting equivalent in Tortall might be the Gift, although it isn't quite the same. Academic magic can be learned, for example at the University of Lightsbridge. To do so, prospective mages have to possess magic. They are tested by experienced mages who are skilled at seeing spells, called "Magic Sniffers" by common folk. Academic magic comes from inside of the mage, whereas Ambient magic comes from the mage's surrounding environment. The three signs of Academic magic are telekinesis (moving objects with one's mind), creating images in fire, and creating light in glass objects.
Niklaren Goldeye is an Academic mage, and a main character. His speciality is vision magic.
Another form of magic in Emelan is ambient magic. It is possible to possess both forms of magic. Ambient magic is known to block academic magic when it is not controlled.
